Your Wetsuit Is Dirtier Than a Rinse Suggests: What a Cleaning Spray Removes That Water Can't

Rinse your wetsuit after every swim. That advice has been repeated so often it now passes for the entire cleaning routine. A freshwater rinse lifts surface salt and loose chlorine, but it cannot touch the thin layer of skin oil, sunscreen, and chloramines that settles into the outer nylon, the neoprene cells, and the seam tape. That layer explains the stale smell, the tacky collar, and the stiffening material over a season. A wetsuit cleaning spray breaks down that film. It removes what water leaves behind.

Higher cell counts mean more flexibility, and they also mean the material responds quickly to whatever it touches after a swim. A cleaning spray works alongside a rinse. One flushes loose debris, and the other lifts the oily residue that water cannot dissolve.

The residue a rinse leaves behind

After any swim, your suit carries salt, chlorine or chloramines, dead skin cells, body oil, sunscreen, hair product, and sometimes lake or ocean algae. Fresh water dilutes and carries away the water-soluble portion of that mix. Salt crystals dissolve, and loose chlorine molecules rinse off. The oil-based layer remains because body oil and sunscreen do not dissolve in water. They settle into the nylon weave and work into the seam perforations. In a chlorinated pool, chlorine reacts with ammonia from sweat and urine to form chloramines. Those chloramines have a sharp odor and cling to fabric more stubbornly than the free chlorine that rinses away with plain water.

That residue oxidizes over time and feeds the bacteria behind the stale wetsuit smell. It also holds moisture against the neoprene and nylon, giving odor another place to grow. A rinse delays this. It does not stop it.

What a cleaning spray does differently

A wetsuit cleaner made for neoprene uses surfactants to lift oils and chloramines off the material. Surfactants lower the surface tension between the residue and the fabric, so water can carry the waste away. A good spray is pH-balanced for neoprene and nylon. Household soaps and detergents are often alkaline, and repeated use can dry out the nylon outer layer and weaken the adhesive in seam tape. That matters because seams flex with every stroke. A cleaning spray made for neoprene avoids that problem.

The spray form also helps. You can apply it directly to the high-contact zones that hold the most residue: the collar, underarms, back zipper area, and any spot where sunscreen smears onto the chest or shoulders. You do not need to fill a bucket and soak the whole suit.

Why the inside matters as much as the outside

A common mistake is to spray only the outside. The inside of a wetsuit sees the most body oil and sweat. If you wear a tri top or sunscreen under the suit, the interior needs the same attention.

Thin race neoprene and lined cold-water suits

The Helix is built for total race-day performance. The arms and shoulders use thin neoprene to maximize flexibility and feel for the water. That same thin material has less margin for breakdown from chlorine and oil. A Fusion or Reaction used for weekly training sees more exposure hours and more sunscreen. The Thermal Reaction adds a Zirconium jersey lining. That lining holds warmth, and it can also hold body oils if it is not cleaned. The inside of that suit deserves the same spray attention as the outside.

How to clean a wetsuit in six steps

  1. Rinse the suit inside and out with cool or lukewarm water at the pool or beach. Hot water can damage neoprene and break down seam glue.
  2. Spray the outside, focusing on the collar, underarms, chest panel, and any sunscreen-heavy area.
  3. Work the spray in with your hands or a soft cloth. A stiff brush can scuff the nylon.
  4. Rinse again with cool water.
  5. Turn the suit inside out and repeat lightly on the interior. Chloramines collect against the skin side during long pool sessions.
  6. Hang the suit to dry away from direct sun and heat.

The whole routine takes less time than most swimmers spend waiting for a shower.

How often to spray

Use the spray after every pool swim. Chlorinated water is the most aggressive environment a wetsuit sees. For open water, spray when you have worn sunscreen or when the water is heavy with algae or silt. If you swim in clean cold fresh water and rinse immediately, a rinse may be enough that day. During a high-use block of three or more swims a week, a weekly spray clean is a reasonable rhythm for most swimmers.

Pool versus open water

Triathlon season changes the residue profile. Early-season pool training loads the suit with chloramines. In summer, sunscreen and lake water add oil and organic matter. Late-season cold water means more layers and fewer chances to clean. Adjust the spray habit accordingly. A suit that goes from a chlorinated pool to a weekend open water session without cleaning is carrying both residues at once, and that combination can make the neckline tacky and the seams feel brittle sooner than either condition alone.

Salt water swimmers should rinse immediately after each swim. Salt crystals form as the suit dries and can abrade the neoprene when the suit flexes on the next use. A spray after the rinse removes the sunscreen and body oils that salt alone will not lift.

The drying step that preserves the work

Cleaning only works if the suit dries correctly. Hang it in a shaded, well-ventilated place. Direct UV light degrades neoprene and fades nylon. Do not put a wetsuit in a dryer, on a radiator, or in a hot car. Turning the suit inside out for the first part of drying helps the interior dry first, where odor usually starts. Once the inside is dry, turn the suit back and let the outside finish.

After both sides are dry, store the suit flat or folded at the waist over a wide hanger. Hanging a wet suit by the shoulders stretches the material and can distort the fit. A damp suit sealed in a bag breeds the same odor and bacteria the spray removed. Dry it before you store it.

What to avoid in a spray

You do not need a complicated product. Look for a spray labeled neoprene safe or wetsuit safe. Avoid these ingredients and products:

  • Bleach
  • Alcohol
  • Petroleum solvents
  • Fabric softener
  • Strong fragrances

Neoprene and nylon stay stable within a narrow pH range. Alkaline cleaners can cause the nylon to stiffen and the seam adhesive to break down over repeated exposures. That is why automotive degreasers and household sprays are poor choices for a suit that flexes thousands of times in a single open water session.

For years, swimmers used diluted dish soap or baby shampoo because that was the available advice. Those products can leave behind surfactants and fragrance inside the fabric, and their pH is not matched to a wetsuit. A dedicated spray removes that guesswork.

Spray is maintenance, not repair

A cleaning spray does not fix a tear, a split seam, or neoprene that has already stiffened from heat or chlorine. It also does not replace rinsing.
