A wetsuit hanger has one job: hold the shoulder panels in the shape they had the day you bought the suit. Keeping the suit off the floor matters, but it's not the main task. A standard shirt hanger does the opposite of what a swim wetsuit needs. It places a narrow point under the collar and lets the full weight of a wet suit pull the neck opening wider while the suit dries. After a season, you get a loose collar, a crease across the shoulder blades, and a suit that no longer sits flat at the catch.

A Wetsuit Hanger Is a Shape-Holder
Swim wetsuits get their range of motion from the shoulder yoke and armhole pattern. Those areas are the most complex parts of the cut. Fold a suit over a bar or hang it from a thin shirt hanger and the neoprene bends along a single line. Closed-cell foam compresses under that line and remembers it. Each storage cycle reinforces the crease until it becomes the path of least resistance every time you reach forward.
The Helix shows why this matters. Its arms and shoulders use very thin neoprene so the suit feels less restrictive through the stroke. That thinness carries a durability trade-off. The brand itself says the Helix's delicate neoprene isn't ideal for heavy training use. A race suit like the $995 Helix marks more easily from a sharp hanger than the neoprene in the Reaction or Fusion. If you own one, a wide, contoured hanger isn't optional.
How a Bad Hanger Changes Your Suit Over a Season
Storage damage rarely shows up in the first week. It compounds.
- Hanging a wet suit by the collar stretches the neck. A soaked wetsuit weighs several pounds. All of that pulls on the neck loop or collar. Women's Femme Fit suits have a lowered neckline and extended zipper for easier entry. Hanging by the collar works directly against that fit.
- A narrow hanger folds the armhole seam. If the hanger ends before the armhole, the suit bends over the edge. The seam takes the load, and the shoulder panel develops a crease that can restrict rotation.
- Heat plus dampness speeds the damage. A wet suit stored in a warm closet or near a radiator ages faster. Neoprene breaks down under heat, and heat damage falls outside the one-year warranty.
You notice the changes on a September morning when the collar feels loose and the suit no longer sits evenly on your back.
What a Wetsuit Hanger Should Do
A useful wetsuit hanger supports the suit the way your body does. Look for a broad, contoured shoulder shape wide enough to reach at least the outer end of the armhole seam. If the hanger ends inside the shoulder, the suit folds over the edge. Molded plastic or thick foam with a smooth curve works well. Wire shirt hangers and wooden suit hangers with sharp ends concentrate pressure on a tiny area.
The hook should attach at the center and stay clear of the collar. The neck of the suit shouldn't bear weight. When you place the suit on the hanger, the collar and zipper should hang naturally without pulling.
A Five-Minute Storage Routine
After a pool or ocean swim, rinse the suit in cool fresh water. Turn it inside out and place it on the wide hanger. Let the liner dry first; a suit that stays damp on the inside breaks down sooner and starts to smell. After an hour or two, reverse the suit and let the outside dry. Keep it out of direct sun, away from radiators, and out of a closed car on a hot day.

When the Crease Is Already There
