Most wetsuit buyers focus on warmth and fit. That misses a more practical point. Put on a full suit and your swimming changes before the first stroke. Hips sit higher. Legs float. The same effort often produces a pace you rarely see in a pool, and for a triathlete or open water swimmer who does most workouts in a pool, that difference deserves more than a race-morning try-on.
A wetsuit adds lift and insulation. Blueseventy wetsuits are swim equipment, not Coast Guard-certified personal flotation devices. Open water safety still depends on a swim buddy, a visible tow float, and attention to conditions. The lift changes body position; the thickness changes how shoulders and legs move.
Buoyancy reshapes your body position
All blueseventy wetsuits use Yamamoto neoprene in 38, 39, and 40 cell. A higher cell number means more flexibility. Even the most flexible shoulder panel adds a little resistance to arm recovery. A swim-specific wetsuit is cut differently from a surf or scuba suit because it has to allow repeated overhead arm motion while placing buoyancy where it keeps your hips and legs high enough to reduce drag.
Beginner swimmers gain proportionally more from that added lift than advanced swimmers. The lift changes feedback from your kick and hips. It also changes how far you rotate, how often you breathe, and how much effort goes into staying horizontal.
A short history of swim-specific neoprene
Blueseventy's wetsuit lineage goes back to 1993, when the company that later became blueseventy developed one of the first triathlon-specific wetsuits. In 2005 the brand renamed and launched the Helix as its flagship. Since then, design work has focused on shoulder flexibility, lower necklines, and women's-specific fit.
The 2014 Femme Fit expansion added 15 women's sizing options. The 2015 Thermal Helix was the first purpose-built cold water swimming wetsuit in the line. The 2018 LIFT panels targeted buoyancy in the hips and legs. Each change moved the suits toward less bulk, more mobility, and fit that accounts for how a swimmer moves.
Train in the suit before race morning
Many swimmers save the wetsuit for race day to keep it fresh or because they worry about pool chlorine. If your race permits wetsuits, you need enough suited sessions to adapt to the way the suit changes body angle, cadence, sighting rhythm, and breathing pattern. You don't need every workout in it.
A practical baseline is two to four open water sessions in the suit before your first race. For a frequent racer, one open water session each week in the suit works well. Chlorine degrades neoprene over time, so most wetsuit sessions should happen in open water. Use the pool only if you can rinse the suit thoroughly and dry it out of the sun afterward. Each suited session teaches you the version of your stroke that races in open water, and that version needs enough repetitions to feel automatic when the starting horn sounds.
Match the suit to your training week
The right model depends on how often you swim and how cold the water gets. If you swim open water once a week or more and want a suit that holds up to frequent use across a full season of lake and ocean sessions, the Reaction ($680) is the workhorse for longer swims. The Fusion ($420) suits shorter, more frequent swims, and its 2021 redesign lowered the neckline without losing the seal. The Sprint ($325) is the entry point.
The Helix ($995) is the race-day suit. It uses thin neoprene in the arms and shoulders for maximum flexibility. We don't recommend it for heavy training use because that thin material breaks down more quickly. Reserve it for racing and key sessions.
For cold water, the Thermal Reaction ($785) adds a Zirconium jersey lining throughout. Below about 56-58°F, a purpose-built thermal suit adds real insulation. Above about 70-72°F, a full suit can feel too warm over longer swims, and a sleeveless or swimskin option becomes more comfortable. Race-legal water temperature rules vary by governing body, so check the current rules from your event organizer rather than relying on a single number.
Fit is different in the water
A wetsuit should feel snug on dry land and more comfortable once a thin layer of water gets between your skin and the neoprene. That water is part of the insulation system. If the suit feels loose on land, it will flush and sag in the water. If it feels so tight you can't raise your arms overhead, check whether you've pulled it up enough at the torso and seated it correctly in the armpits before assuming the size is wrong.
Take your time donning. Use the pads of your fingers, not your nails. Work the material up gradually over calves, hips, torso, and shoulders. Fingernail punctures and heel tears are the two most common ways swimmers damage a new suit, and both come from forcing the suit.
For women, Femme Fit changes the pattern in the bust, torso, wrists, and ankles. It also lowers the neckline and extends the zipper for easier entry and faster transitions. Those changes matter in open water because chafing and shoulder restriction show up after 20 or 30 minutes, not in a 30-second try-on.
What to expect from your stroke
Expect your hips and legs to ride higher. That reduces the muscular effort required to stay horizontal, and it can mask a weak kick. If you only swim in a wetsuit, you may lose the feedback your legs normally give you in the pool.
Rotation also changes. You feel the added buoyancy around the torso holding you higher, and some swimmers over-rotate because the suit makes it easy. Breathing follows body position. With higher hips, the head may sit differently, so practice full exhalation underwater during wetsuit sessions.
Sighting becomes easier only if you lift your eyes, not your whole head. Lifting the full head drops the hips and erases the position the suit gave you.
Care after salt, chlorine, and cold water
- Rinse the suit with fresh water after every open water swim.
- Don't leave it in a wet bag.
- Dry it inside out first, then outside, away from direct sun and heat.
- Check the zipper before and after use, and never force a stuck zipper.
- Store the suit dry and out of sunlight.
Small nicks and punctures can be repaired with Aquaseal neoprene cement. Heat and chlorine degrade neoprene, so a thorough fresh-water rinse after a pool session matters as much as after an ocean swim.
Take a test swim
Before you commit, take your suit for a test swim. It won't affect your return if it's clean and dry. Happy swimming.
