A raw, irritated neck can turn a perfect open water swim into a misery. You’re not alone - neck chafing is one of the most common discomforts triathletes and swimmers report. The good news? It’s almost always fixable once you understand why it happens. Let’s break down the causes and the steps you can take to finally swim in comfort.
The root of the problem
Your wetsuit’s neck seal has a tough job. It needs to sit snugly to prevent water from flushing in and out with every stroke, yet it has to move with you as you breathe, sight, and rotate. Chafing occurs when that seal rubs against your skin repeatedly. The main culprits are:
- Fit that’s too loose. A neck that gaps or shifts with each head turn lets water in, causing the material to slide and abrade the skin.
- Fit that’s too tight. Constant, unyielding pressure can cause friction burns - especially if the suit is pulled down too low or doesn’t match your body’s shape.
- Material stiffness. Stiff, thick neoprene around the neck simply doesn’t move with you, so every stroke becomes a rub.
This is exactly why swim-specific suits are worlds apart from general-purpose wetsuits. At blueseventy, every neckline is engineered to balance seal with freedom - using high-stretch Yamamoto neoprene and tailored patterns - but even the best suit will chafe if the size or donning isn’t right for you.
Fit first: get the right size
All blueseventy wetsuits are designed around one truth: snug on land, comfortable in the water. A suit that feels tight when you’re standing in the parking lot will relax once you’re horizontal. A neck that gaps noticeably when you turn your head likely means the suit is too big - and that extra room invites flushing and friction.
The quickest way to dial in your size is to use the height and weight charts built into each product page. Because body shapes vary, we always recommend a test swim in your suit. You’re welcome to swim in it, and if the neck (or any part) doesn’t work, you can still return or exchange it within 30 days - clean and dry, with tags on.

For women, the Femme Fit line refines the entire upper-body pattern, including a lowered neckline that follows the natural contours of the female physique. It reduces contact exactly where chafing tends to flare up - the throat and the front of the neck.
Design innovations that help
At blueseventy we’ve spent years listening to swimmers, and that feedback led to meaningful changes:
- Fusion wetsuit (redesigned 2021). The current Fusion features a lower-sitting neckline that still maintains a watertight seal. By sitting just a fraction lower, it keeps the collar away from the most sensitive part of the throat - a small shift that many swimmers say transforms all-day comfort.
- Helix and Reaction ranges. Built from premium, high-cell Yamamoto neoprene, these suits use extremely flexible material around the shoulders and neck. Less stiffness equals less friction, especially during long sessions when fatigue sets in.
- Thermal Reaction. For cold-water swimming, the Zirconium jersey lining feels soft against the skin, reducing the sandpaper effect that some nylon liners can cause on a raw neck.
None of these designs claim to “eliminate chafing for everyone” - there is no magic bullet. But they are methodically constructed to minimize the factors that cause it.
Field fixes for your current suit
If you already own a blueseventy wetsuit that occasionally chafes, try these steps before reaching for a different model:
- Don it perfectly. Pull the suit as high as your body allows, especially through the torso and over the hips. That brings the neck seal up to sit flat against your throat, not rolled or bunched. (A quick refresh: our fitting guide and video walks you through the technique.)
- Use a non-petroleum chafing balm. Apply a thin layer of water-based anti-chafe stick to your neck before putting the suit on. Avoid anything with petroleum, which can degrade neoprene over time.
- Rinse religiously. Salt, chlorine, and sweat leave behind microscopic crystals that stiffen fabric. A stiff neck collar rubs harder. Rinse inside and out with fresh water after every swim.
- Inspect the seam. Check for any rough overlay of glue or a sharp edge along the collar. If you spot a genuine manufacturing defect - not normal wear - reach out to us. Our one-year warranty covers materials and workmanship.
When to try a different model
If you’ve nailed the fit, lubed up, and still find your neck raw after every swim, your current suit’s neck design might simply not match your anatomy. That’s fine - it’s why we offer choices, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
- For maximum everyday comfort, the Fusion is purpose-built with that lower neckline.
- For warm-weather swimming or easy-on/easy-off, the Reaction Sleeveless removes neck contact entirely.
- For cold-water training, the Thermal Reaction wraps a soft, insulating jersey lining next to your skin.
Remember: a wetsuit that fights you on the neck never lets you focus on your stroke. The right fit, the right style, and a little preparation give you the freedom to simply swim.
Every swimmer deserves a wetsuit that doesn’t leave a mark. If you’re ready to find the one that fits your body - and your swim - jump into our sizing tool or take a suit for a test swim. You can return it if it’s not the one. Happy swimming!
