What Your Wetsuit Picks Up in the Water, and Why the Cleaner You Use Matters More Than You Think

Most swimmers rinse their wetsuit after a swim and call it done. Fair enough. But rinsing and cleaning are not the same act, and the difference between them shows up two seasons later as a suit that still snaps back to shape versus one that feels like it's swimming through wet cardboard.

The chemistry behind that difference is more interesting than "just use fresh water." It touches how neoprene foam is built, what's actually floating in the lake or ocean you train in, and why the greener cleaning products tend to be the ones that protect your suit best too.

What's Inside That Foam You're Wearing

A wetsuit is not a solid sheet of rubber. The Yamamoto neoprene used across Blue70's wetsuits, graded in 38, 39, and 40 cell, is a closed-cell foam. Picture millions of microscopic gas bubbles held inside a rubber matrix. The higher the cell number, the more of that structure is air rather than rubber, which is why 40-cell neoprene moves so freely through the shoulders compared to 38-cell.

That same bubble structure is also the suit's weak point. UV light, ozone, petroleum solvents, and chlorine all degrade rubber polymers, just through different mechanisms. Harsh cleaning chemicals do the same thing to the walls between those gas cells. Enough exposure, and the cells lose their spring permanently. Swimmers usually describe this as a suit that's "gone dead." It doesn't happen overnight. It happens one bad rinse at a time.

What You're Actually Rinsing Off

Ask most swimmers what they're washing away and they'll say salt. Fair for an ocean swim. Freshwater carries a completely different residue profile, and it's worth knowing what you're dealing with.

  • Algae and organic film. Warm, nutrient-rich lakes support algae and cyanobacteria that coat neoprene in a thin organic layer. Trapped inside a lined suit's interior, that film becomes food for bacteria between swims. It's the reason a wetsuit stored damp starts to smell within a day or two.
  • Chloramines. The CDC's water treatment guidance explains that chloramines form when chlorine reacts with organic matter like sweat and skin cells. These compounds are chemically harder on rubber and synthetic fibers than plain chlorine on its own, which matters for anyone doing cold-water brick sessions in a pool.
  • Sunscreen residue. Oxybenzone and octinoxate, common UV filters, bind readily to synthetic surfaces. A 2015 study in Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology found these compounds persist on synthetic materials well beyond a single water exposure. On a wetsuit, that shows up as a faintly tacky outer skin that attracts dirt over time.

A hose-down handles the obvious stuff sitting on the surface. It does nothing for what's chemically bonded to the material. That's the real argument for an actual cleaning product, not just a rinse.

Gentle and Long-Lasting Turn Out to Be the Same Product

"Eco-friendly wetsuit cleaner" often gets treated as a values purchase. Buy it because it's kinder to the water it eventually drains back into. That's true, but it undersells the point. Low-impact formulations tend to overlap heavily with formulations that are gentler on neoprene itself.

Here's why. Harsh surfactants, bleach, and petroleum-based degreasers work on organic residue because they break down fats, proteins, and polymer bonds without discrimination. Rubber shares enough chemical structure with the grime these products are designed to destroy that the suit takes damage right alongside the residue. A cleaner formulated at a gentler pH, without bleach or aggressive solvents, is easier on the lake or ocean it rinses into. It's also easier on the foam you're trying to keep flexible through another season. Same product, two benefits, no trade-off.

A Cleaning Routine That Actually Protects the Suit

None of this requires much extra time. It requires doing the right things in the right order.

  1. Rinse immediately after every swim. Turn the suit partly inside out and rinse the lining, not just the outer skin. Residue against your body is often more concentrated than what's on the surface.
  2. Use lukewarm water, never hot. Hot water speeds up degradation of the internal cell structure. Lukewarm is enough to loosen salt and organic film.
  3. Wash with a dedicated neoprene cleaner every few sessions. A daily rinse covers most of it. A proper wash catches what plain water leaves behind, especially after a swim in visibly algae-heavy water.
  4. Dry inside out first, then right-side out, on a wide hanger. Wire hangers create pressure points at the shoulders, exactly where flexibility matters most for your stroke. Shade with airflow beats direct sun, which accelerates UV breakdown.
  5. Never machine wash or machine dry. This is the fastest way to ruin a wetsuit that has nothing to do with a fingernail puncture or a heel tear. Agitation and heat do in one cycle what months of neglect would take to accomplish.

Cold-Water Suits Need a Bit More Attention

Swimmers extending their season in a Thermal Reaction suit should factor in one extra detail. The Zirconium lining is built to trap a thin layer of warmed water against your skin. That same design traps more body oils and organic residue than an unlined suit would. A suit worn through a full cold-water season needs more frequent full washes than a warm-water sleeveless suit worn occasionally. The lining is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Residue just comes along for the ride.

The Real Difference Between a Suit That Lasts and One That Doesn't

There's no long-term study tracking wetsuit lifespan against specific cleaning habits, so treat this as informed reasoning rather than a lab result. A suit rinsed in hot water, cleaned with a harsh detergent, dried in direct sun, and folded for storage is fighting against nearly every mechanism that keeps neoprene elastic, all at the same time. A suit rinsed in lukewarm water, cleaned periodically with a gentler product, dried in shade on a wide hanger, and hung rather than folded avoids every one of those failure points.

Stack that up over a full season of open-water training, and the gap between good and bad aftercare is probably larger than the gap between neoprene grades.
