If you’ve ever stood in a shop holding a wetsuit and wondered whether the one on the left is really any different from the one on the right, you’re not alone. On the surface, a surfing wetsuit and a swimming wetsuit look like close cousins. Both are made of neoprene. Both zip up (usually in the back). Both promise to keep you warmer in the water.
But put each one on and try to swim 1,500 meters with your face in the water, and the difference becomes obvious in about 90 seconds. The way a wetsuit fits your shoulders, where it puts buoyancy, how it seals at the neck, and what kind of neoprene it uses are all purpose-built. A surfing wetsuit is made for paddling out and popping up. A swimming wetsuit-like every suit Blue70 makes-is built for one thing only: forward motion in the water, stroke after stroke.
Built for a different body position
The biggest design split comes down to how your body is positioned in the water. When you’re surfing, you spend most of your time sitting on a board, paddling with your head up, or riding a wave in a near-vertical stance. A surf wetsuit doesn’t need to lift your legs-in fact, neutral or slightly sinky legs feel more natural when you’re sitting on a board. The neoprene in a surf suit is often distributed evenly or thicker in areas that take a beating on the board: chest, knees, back.
When you’re swimming freestyle, however, everything rotates around a horizontal body axis. Your hips and legs need to ride near the surface to cut drag. If your legs sink, you’re essentially dragging a small parachute through the water. That’s where Blue70’s swim-specific designs take over. A surf wetsuit just isn’t shaped for that. Its buoyancy is more general, often concentrated in the torso for floatation while sitting, which can tilt a swimmer chest-high and hips-low. That’s the opposite of what you want when you’re trying to sight a buoy.
Shoulder freedom: the non-negotiable for swimmers
This is where the two types of suits diverge most dramatically. A surf wetsuit’s neoprene in the shoulders and arms has to be tough enough to handle constant paddle strokes against a board and the abuse of wipeouts. Durability wins over flexibility. The neoprene is often thicker and stiffer, and the seams may be robust flatlock stitching that can chafe after a few hundred swim strokes.
A swimming wetsuit, on the other hand, lives and dies by shoulder freedom. Every Blue70 suit uses high-grade Yamamoto neoprene-38, 39, and 40-cell-in strategic zones. Higher cell number means more flexibility, and the arms and shoulders get the softest, most pliable neoprene in the suit. That shoulder flexibility isn’t just about comfort. It’s about fatigue. Stiff shoulders force you to muscle through each catch, and after a few hundred meters your stroke falls apart. A swim-specific suit lets you hold your technique longer, which matters far more than pure warmth.
Buoyancy with purpose
Surfing wetsuits provide floatation, but it’s general-purpose. Swimming wetsuits place buoyancy with surgical precision. Blue70’s suits use panels of different neoprene thicknesses-and in some cases, NBR foam in the LIFT panels-to lift exactly where a swimmer needs it: the hips and upper thighs. This puts you in that downhill swimming position almost automatically, without stiffening the torso or fighting your natural roll.

Swimmers use it in pools or warm open water to get the hip lift without the thermal layer. That’s not a concept that exists in the surf world because the body position problem doesn’t exist in the same way.
Neck, wrists, and the seal that lets you breathe
Surf wetsuits often have wide, adjustable collars or semi-dry seals designed to flush less water when you wipe out. That bulk under your chin feels awful when you’re rotating to breathe every two strokes. Swimmers need a low, pliable, smooth-skin neck seal that keeps water exchange manageable but never chokes.

The outer surface of many surf wetsuits uses textured or durable fabric that can handle wax, board contact, and sun. Swim wetsuits, especially performance models, tend to use a slick, smooth-skin coating on the chest, hips, and legs to reduce drag through the water. Think of it as a minimal, integrated swimskin. Inside, the story changes again. Surf suits often rely on thicker raw neoprene, which provides insulation but feels heavier and less responsive when you’re trying to turn over a fast cadence.

If you’re swimming in open water-training, racing, or just adventuring-you will be faster, more comfortable, and less fatigued in a swim-specific wetsuit. Full stop. A surf wetsuit will technically get you through a chilly lake swim, but it will fight your stroke, strain your shoulders, and drag your legs.
