What Happens to a Triathlon Wetsuit When It's Not in the Water

Ask any triathlete about wetsuit care and they'll tell you about rinsing off chlorine or storing it away from the sun. Fair enough. But here's what most people miss: the real damage to a wetsuit rarely happens during the swim leg of a race. It happens during the seven or eight months a year the suit just sits there, folded in a gear bag or draped over a garage hook, doing nothing at all.

That's a problem worth fixing, because storage is a materials question, not a tidiness one.

Neoprene Remembers Every Fold

A wetsuit isn't a sheet of rubber. It's closed-cell foam, built from tiny pockets of nitrogen gas trapped inside a polymer structure. Blue70 wetsuits use Yamamoto neoprene in 38, 39, and 40 cell grades. Higher cell counts mean more stretch through the shoulders and torso, which is exactly what you want when you're reaching for the catch mid-stroke.

That stretch only holds up if the cell structure stays intact. Fold a wetsuit along the same crease for months at a time and you're forcing the foam to hold a shape it was never built to hold. Neoprene has some elastic memory, sure, but repeated compression at one fold line wears down the cell walls. You won't notice a tear. You'll notice a stroke that feels a little stiffer through recovery, or a crease that never quite disappears even after the suit's had a chance to warm up in the water.

During a swim, the suit stretches and recovers thousands of times per session. That's the job it's built for. In storage, it should be doing the opposite: no tension, no sharp folds, no pressure against a hard edge for weeks on end.

Hang It Instead of Folding It

If there's one habit that does more for wetsuit longevity than anything else, it's this: hang the suit on a wide, rounded hanger instead of folding it into a bag or a drawer.

A few things make this actually work:

  • Skip the wire hanger. Wire concentrates all the suit's weight onto a narrow point right at the shoulder seam, which happens to be the exact spot you need to stay flexible for a full arm extension. A wooden or thick plastic hanger spreads that weight out.
  • Drape it at the waist if closet space is tight. Fold the suit over the hanger bar at the waist so the legs hang on one side and the arms and torso hang free on the other. This keeps weight off the underarm and shoulder panels, which are the thinnest parts of the suit and the first to show wear.
  • Give the seams a break every so often. Hanging a suit by the shoulders for a week between sessions won't hurt anything. Hanging it that way for six straight months puts constant stress on the same seam, day after day. If it's in for the long haul, reposition it partway through the off-season so the load shifts somewhere else.

Heat and Sunlight Are the Quiet Culprits

Neoprene ages through two main forces: UV exposure and heat. Both break down the polymer matrix over time and make the material brittle instead of supple.

UV works fast. Leaving a wetsuit to dry on a car roof or a sun-baked dock after a lake swim feels harmless enough. It's also one of the more common ways triathletes shorten their suit's lifespan without ever connecting the dots. Dry the suit inside-out first, somewhere shaded, then finish drying it right-side-out away from direct sun.

Heat is slower but adds up just as much. Garages, car trunks, and attics regularly swing past 90°F in summer across most of the country. That kind of sustained heat softens the adhesives holding seams together and speeds up foam breakdown. A closet at normal room temperature beats a shelf next to the water heater every time.

Then there's humidity. A suit stored while still damp, especially rolled up tight in a gear bag, creates a closed, moist environment that mildew finds very comfortable. Beyond the smell, mildew can degrade both the neoprene and the interior lining. Store it completely dry, inside and out. No exceptions.

The Off-Season Is Where Suits Actually Wear Out

Most US triathlon seasons run roughly May through September, depending on where you live and what races are on your calendar. That leaves seven or eight months where the suit does nothing but sit. If those months are spent folded tight in a plastic tote in an unheated garage, the suit absorbs compression, temperature swings, and sometimes trapped moisture, all without a single lap to show for it.

Think of the off-season as maintenance time, not dead time:

  1. Rinse and fully dry the suit before its longest stretch of disuse, even if it looks clean from the last swim.
  2. Store it hung, or loosely rolled at most. Never folded tight.
  3. Zip it fully closed or leave it fully open before storing. A zipper caught halfway, under tension from a snagged pull tab, can develop a stress point right at that spot.
  4. Check back and reposition the suit partway through the off-season if it's been hanging the same way for months.

What Storage Can't Fix

Good storage habits slow down gradual wear. They won't undo a fingernail catching the neoprene, a watch clasp snagging the lining, or a rough yank on the ankle cuff during a rushed transition. Those are acute injuries to the suit, not aging, and that's exactly why they typically fall outside a manufacturing warranty. The material didn't fail. The handling did.

That distinction matters. Careful storage protects a suit that's already being handled well. It won't save one that gets dragged across pavement in T1 or yanked off by one ankle every single race.

A Simple Routine for Packing It Away

When race season wraps up and it's time to put the suit away for winter, this sequence protects the neoprene better than anything else:

  1. Rinse thoroughly in cool fresh water, inside and out, clearing away salt, chlorine, or lake sediment.
  2. Dry inside-out first, somewhere shaded and ventilated.
  3. Finish drying right-side-out, still out of direct sun.
  4. Zip fully closed or leave fully open. Skip the halfway position.
  5. Hang on a wide hanger, waist-draped if closet space is tight, somewhere with steady indoor temperature.
  6. Check back midway through the off-season and reposition it if it's been sitting the same way for a while.

If you spot a small nick or a loose seam while inspecting the suit before storing it, deal with it now rather than in April. A neoprene cement repair takes an afternoon. Replacing the whole suit takes a lot more than that, and costs a lot more too.

None of this requires special gear or much time out of your week. It just means treating the suit as what it actually is: an engineered piece of foam that performs best when it's asked to do as little unnecessary work as possible between swims. Handle the off-season right, and the suit will still be doing its real work on the one morning that counts.
