What Actually Happens to a Wetsuit When You're Done With It

A swimmer asked me last season what she should do with her old wetsuit. It had two seasons of open water on it, a small tear at the heel, and a shoulder that had gone stiff. She assumed there was a bin somewhere, a program, a way to send it off and feel good about it. There isn't, not really. And that's worth explaining honestly.

Neoprene is polychloroprene, a synthetic rubber that DuPont chemists developed in the early 1930s, building on research by Julius Nieuwland at the University of Notre Dame. The property that makes it excellent for swimming is the exact property that makes it hard to recycle once your swimming days with it are over.

Why neoprene won't just melt down and start over

Manufacturers vulcanize neoprene. Heat and pressure lock the polymer chains into a fixed structure. That's what gives your wetsuit shape memory, resistance to compression at depth, and seams that hold under tension through years of swims. It also makes neoprene a thermoset material, not a thermoplastic.

Here's the difference. A plastic water bottle is thermoplastic. Melt it down, reform it, and you've got a new bottle. Neoprene doesn't work that way. Heat it a second time and it degrades instead of turning liquid again.

Then there's the construction itself. A single wetsuit panel might stack foam neoprene, a jersey knit lining glued on with adhesive, a smooth-skin exterior coating, seam tape, and stitching, sometimes all within one square inch of material. Pulling those layers apart into clean, separate streams before recycling can even start is slow, manual, unglamorous work. At the volume most recyclers deal with, it just doesn't pencil out yet.

What "recycled" usually means

When a used wetsuit does get diverted from a landfill, it almost never becomes another wetsuit. Ground-up neoprene scrap typically ends up as padding, orthotic insoles, gym mats, or gasket material. Products that don't need the rubber to be pure or structurally identical to the original.

That's a real second life. It's just not a loop. Aluminum can go from can to can to can, indefinitely. Neoprene goes one direction. Dropping a ten-year-old wetsuit at a textile collection point is a good move. It's not the same claim as "this suit will become a new suit," and nobody selling wetsuits today can honestly promise that.

The best move happens long before disposal

Given where recycling infrastructure actually stands, the highest-leverage decision a swimmer can make isn't about the end of a wetsuit's life. It's about stretching that life out in the first place.

A well-cared-for suit can swim for years, seasons of open water, pool workouts, race mornings. A neglected one can blow a seam or tear a heel panel in a matter of months. The gap between those two outcomes usually comes down to a handful of habits, none of which take more than a few minutes.

  • Rinse it in fresh water after every swim. Chlorine and salt both eat away at neoprene faster than plain water exposure.
  • Dry it inside out, out of direct sun. UV light stiffens and cracks neoprene quicker than almost anything else it encounters.
  • Use a thick, rounded hanger, never wire. Wire hangers create pressure points at the shoulders that weaken the material over time.
  • Trim your nails before you suit up. A thin pair of gloves or a plastic bag over each foot makes entry easier and skips the accidental gouge.
  • Keep it away from heat. A hot car trunk in July does real, lasting damage in a single afternoon.

None of this is thrilling advice. It's also the difference between a suit that lasts three seasons and one that lasts eight. Most of the damage that voids a warranty, fingernail punctures, heel tears, heat and chlorine breakdown, is entirely avoidable with the routine above. A one-year manufacturing warranty exists to cover flaws in materials and workmanship. It was never built to cover wear that better habits would have prevented.

Fit matters more than most swimmers realize

Here's something that doesn't get talked about enough: a wetsuit that fits right the first time doesn't just feel better on race morning. It lasts longer, period. A suit that's too tight puts constant strain on seams and neoprene at the shoulders and hips with every single stroke. One that's too loose shifts around and chafes, wearing out fast at contact points like the underarms and collar.

Getting the fit right the first time also cuts down on something nobody talks about, the churn of buying a suit, swimming it once or twice, realizing it's wrong, and ordering a second one. Fix it before you replace it

A torn seam or a small puncture doesn't have to be the end. Neoprene cement, the same category of adhesive used to build the original seams, can rebond a lifted seam or patch a small tear in a matter of minutes. Tossing a small tube in your swim bag next to your goggles and cap is cheap insurance against retiring a suit over something you could have fixed at your kitchen table.

For damage beyond a DIY job, a shop that services wetsuits can often buy a suit another season or two, especially around zipper tracks and heel panels. Those tend to give out long before the neoprene itself does.

When it's really, truly done

Eventually every wetsuit stops sealing the way it should, loses flex through the shoulders, or picks up damage that's past fixing. When that day comes, you've got better options than the trash can.

  1. Check for a local textile or rubber recycling drop-off. Plenty accept wetsuits even without a dedicated program for them.
  2. Cut it up yourself. Old panels make solid gardening knee pads, laptop sleeves, drink koozies, or gym mat padding. The cushioning doesn't go anywhere just because the suit stopped swimming.
  3. Hand it off to a swim club, youth program, or open water group. A suit that no longer fits you perfectly might be exactly what someone else needs to get into cold water for the first time.

Where this might be headed

Material science hasn't sat still on this problem. Researchers and manufacturers have spent years chasing lower-impact rubber sources and construction methods that use fewer bonded layers per panel, either of which could eventually make end-of-life processing less of a headache. None of that changes the chemistry of the neoprene already sitting in your garage right now. Which is exactly why care and repair matter more today than any future recycling breakthrough.

The most useful thing any swimmer can do isn't waiting around for better recycling technology. It's rinsing the suit after every swim. Drying it out of the sun. Patching the small tear before it becomes a big one. Getting the fit right from day one. None of that solves neoprene's chemistry problem. All of it keeps a suit in the water for every season it has left to give.
