Most swimmers can tell you the season they bought their current wetsuit. Fewer can tell you what happened to the one before it. Neoprene doesn't break down on any timeline that matters to a human life, and the UK has no dedicated collection stream for it. So old wetsuits disappear into the loft, the garage, or the bin, and that's usually the last thought anyone gives them.
This isn't an argument for buying less. It's a look at what your suit is actually made of, why that makes disposal awkward, and what genuinely works once a suit is finished. Understanding the material is also the fastest way to keep your current suit swimming longer, which is the best disposal strategy there is.
Why Neoprene Sticks Around
Neoprene is polychloroprene, a synthetic rubber first developed in the 1930s. It's manufactured through a process that seals off thousands of tiny gas cells inside the rubber structure. That's the entire trick behind a wetsuit: trapped air gives you insulation and buoyancy. It's also why the material barely degrades. Landfill neoprene doesn't compost. It doesn't oxidise away over a few years the way paper or food waste does. It just sits.
Yamamoto neoprene, used across the Blue70 range in 38, 39 and 40 cell grades, is prized for exactly this cell stability. No UK local authority currently runs a kerbside collection for wetsuits. Put one in general waste and it goes to landfill or incineration with everything else in that bin. Textile recycling banks, the kind found outside supermarkets, are built for cotton, polyester, and wool. Most explicitly turn away rubber-based items like wetsuits because the material jams their shredding equipment.
That leaves three realistic routes:
- Household Waste Recycling Centres. Most council tip sites accept wetsuits, usually into general waste, though some sites separate rubber into its own skip. Check your local authority's website before making the trip.
- Specialist neoprene recyclers. A small number of processors in the UK and Europe work specifically with end-of-life neoprene, breaking it down for reuse in things like laptop sleeves, yoga mat padding, and orthopaedic supports. Coverage varies by region, so search for current options near you rather than assuming a service exists.
- Repurposing before disposal. A suit that's no longer swim-worthy can still yield usable neoprene. Makers use offcuts for phone case padding, tool roll liners, gardening knee pads, coasters. It won't solve the problem for a whole suit, but it delays landfill for part of it.
Make the Suit You Own Last Longer
The single most effective disposal strategy is the one that postpones disposal. A wetsuit that lasts four seasons instead of two has already halved its landfill footprint before you've made a single trip to the tip.
Rinse the suit in fresh water after every swim, chlorine or salt. Chlorine attacks the bonding and lining fibres over time, which is why care guidance treats pool use differently from open-water use when it comes to expected lifespan. Dry the suit inside-out, away from direct sun, rather than folding it into a kit bag while it's still damp. Neoprene left wet and folded develops mildew and permanent stiffness long before the material itself is actually worn out.
Small punctures and heel tears are the two most common ways a nearly-new wetsuit gets damaged, usually from a fingernail catch or a heel dragged across a boat ramp during a rushed transition. Neither has to end a suit's life if it's caught early. Neoprene cement costs a few pounds and takes about ten minutes to apply. That's a small price against a wetsuit that costs hundreds. That's when disposal, not another tube of neoprene cement, is the honest answer.
Before that point, most damage is fixable. After it, your options are the local recycling centre, a specialist neoprene recycler if one operates near you, or salvaging the material yourself for smaller projects. None of these is as good as a nationwide neoprene recycling stream, and the UK doesn't have one yet. Until it does, the most useful thing you can do is treat the suit you already own as the one you intend to keep: rinse it, dry it properly, fix the small stuff fast, and pick a model built for how you actually train.
