Wetsuit vs Swimskin: The 68 to 76 Degree Problem

A full-sleeve wetsuit holds a thin layer of water against your skin and lets your body warm it. A swimskin provides almost no insulation. That single difference causes most wetsuit-versus-swimskin confusion, especially between 68 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

What Each Layer Does for You

Neoprene works by letting a thin film of water in, holding it against the skin, and allowing the body to warm it. The foam slows heat movement from the skin into the surrounding water. blueseventy wetsuits use Yamamoto neoprene in 38, 39, and 40 cell grades. A higher cell number means more flexibility in the suit. For cold water, the Thermal Reaction adds a zirconium jersey lining throughout, a synthetic wool layer designed to hold additional heat near the body.

A swimskin takes the opposite path. Its surface is smooth and compresses the torso and hips for reduced drag. It traps no water layer and adds little buoyancy. In warm water, that absence of insulation works in your favor. In cool water, it works against you.

The Crossover Range: When the Same Degree Reading Misleads

Water in the high 60s and low 70s Fahrenheit feels cold when you wade in and often comfortable once you are swimming at race effort. The same reading does not tell you whether a full suit will become a heat trap by the final 500 meters. That range is the crossover. A full suit in 74°F can feel good for the first 20 minutes and then too warm as the effort continues. A swimskin in 70°F can feel jarring at the start and then fine after the first 500 meters.

blueseventy's published guidance treats water below about 56°F to 58°F as cold enough to justify a thermal suit. Water above about 70°F to 72°F is warm enough that a full suit can become too warm over longer swims. That leaves a wide middle band where no single answer fits every swimmer.

Why the Middle Band Is Personal

Body composition changes the arithmetic. A lean swimmer loses heat faster in the same water than a swimmer with more subcutaneous fat. Acclimatization matters as much: a swimmer who trains weekly in 65°F handles a 68°F race better than someone who has only swum in a 78°F pool. Race distance and intensity then multiply the effect, because heat production rises with effort.

Where Swimskins Came From

Swimskins appeared from a rulebook and heat problem. Some races barred wetsuits, and some athletes overheated in full neoprene when the water climbed. blueseventy's swimskin lineage goes back to the pointzero3, worn by Kona winners in the mid-2000s. In 2016, the line added the first short-sleeved swimskin, a design that kept the torso smooth while freeing the shoulders.

That history matters. A swimskin is a hydrodynamic tool for warm water. It preserves range of motion and avoids trapping heat. In the crossover range, it becomes the right tool when the thermal cost of a full suit outweighs the buoyancy benefit. Distance and Effort Shift the Same Water Temperature

Heat production rises with effort. A 750-meter sprint generates more heat per minute than a 3.8-kilometer steady swim. In 71°F water, a sprinter can overheat in a full suit late in the race. A long-course athlete may want the extra warmth and buoyancy because total exposure time is longer and average effort is often lower. Those two swimmers experience the same water temperature differently.

For a 10k open-water swim at a moderate pace in 68°F, a full suit often fits the thermal need. The body loses heat to the water for two or more hours. A sleeveless wetsuit, such as the Reaction Sleeveless, keeps the torso and hips supported while letting the arms cool. For the crossover range, it behaves like a middle setting between a full suit and a swimskin.

Buoyancy also matters here. A wetsuit lifts the hips and legs and reduces drag. A swimskin adds less lift but reduces surface resistance. In open-water swimming, buoyancy equals speed. If the water is cool enough that the extra lift helps you hold position without overheating, the wetsuit earns its place.

Race Morning Decision Sequence

  1. Check the measured water temperature, not the air forecast. A lake surface thermometer or race director reading beats an app.
  2. Note your duration and intended effort. Short, hard swims generate heat. Long, steady swims lose heat over time.
  3. Be honest about cold tolerance and acclimatization. If you have not swum below 65°F this season, a swimskin at 70°F is a larger shock than it is for a year-round open-water swimmer.

Use these starting bands:

  • Below about 58°F: Thermal Reaction.
  • 58 to 68°F: a full wetsuit. Reaction suits frequent longer swimming, Fusion suits shorter frequent swims, and Helix is the race-day flexibility choice.
  • 68 to 76°F: the crossover. Use Reaction Sleeveless or a swimskin depending on duration, effort, and heat tolerance. A full suit can still work if you are lean, cold-sensitive, or swimming long.
  • Above about 76°F: a swimskin or no suit. A full suit can lead to overheating on longer swims.

What to Pack for a 70°F Race

For a race with water around 70°F, bring a full suit and a swimskin if you own both. Check the wind and sun at the venue. Sun and light wind reduce the cold shock after the start. Cloud cover and wind increase cooling. Decide at the venue, but decide before you put on your race kit, not after you are standing in transition.
