Ask ten triathletes how they deal with neck chafe and nine will mention lubricant. Almost none will mention their sighting technique or whether their collar actually fits. That's backwards. Chafing at the wetsuit neckline is a friction problem, and friction problems have mechanical causes you can actually fix, not just grease over.
Anti-chafe cream works. But it works best as a backup, not a first line of defense. Get the fit and the movement pattern right first, and the cream has a much smaller job to do.
What's Actually Happening at Your Collar
A wetsuit collar isn't sitting still against your neck. It moves every time you rotate your head to breathe, every time your torso rolls through the stroke. Over a one-hour open water swim, that's thousands of small shearing contacts, almost all concentrated in the same narrow band of skin at the base of your neck and across the traps.
Three things decide how much that friction actually hurts you.
- Contact pressure. Too tight, and the normal force at the skin interface goes up, which drives friction up with it. Too loose, and water sloshes in and out with every stroke, dragging wet neoprene back and forth just as abrasively.
- Surface texture. A smoother interior lining reduces drag per cycle. It's one reason Blue70 redesigned the Fusion's neckline in 2021 to sit lower on the neck. Less material fighting your rotation means fewer abrasive contacts over the course of a swim.
- Cycle count. This one's about time and stroke rate, not distance. A choppy open water swim with constant head-lifting for sighting racks up more collar-skin contacts per hundred meters than the same distance swum flat in a pool.
Why Open Water Is Where This Actually Bites
Pool swimmers in tech suits chafe at the seams under their arms and shoulders. Wetsuit neck chafe is almost entirely an open water and triathlon issue, and two things make it worse there.
Sighting is the first. Every time you lift your head to spot a buoy, you're flexing your neck against the collar at an angle your stroke never uses on a normal breath. Swimmers who sight poorly, too high, too often, rack up far more of these off-axis movements per hundred meters than swimmers with a quick, low sighting pattern.
Duration and adrenaline are the second. Race morning means warm-up laps plus the swim leg itself, often 45 minutes to an hour or more of cumulative collar contact for an age-grouper. And a race-day heart rate blunts pain signals. That's exactly why so many athletes don't notice the damage until T1, when saltwater hits skin that's already raw.
Fit First. Cream Can't Fix a Bad Fit.
No lubricant compensates for a collar that's the wrong size. Blue70's approach to fit has always been the same: a suit should feel snug on dry land and get more comfortable once you're in the water and pressure equalizes against the neoprene. If it feels like it's choking you on land, it will chafe in the water. Full stop.
Run these checks before race week, not the morning of the race.
- The collar should sit close to the base of your neck without pinching. You should be able to swallow without effort.
- Rotate your head fully to each side while the suit is dry. Any dragging sensation on land gets worse after thirty minutes of wet contact.
- If you chafe in the exact same spot every single time, even in a suit that's supposedly your size, that's a signal the suit itself needs testing before race day. Not more cream on race morning.

Women swimmers dealing with recurring collar chafe should also check whether they're actually in a women's-specific cut. What Anti-Chafe Cream Is Actually For
Once your fit is right, lubricant has a narrower job than most people think. It lowers the friction coefficient at the skin-neoprene interface for the residual movement that even a well-fitted collar still produces. It doesn't stop the collar from moving. It just makes each contact less abrasive.
A few details matter more than people realize.
Apply it before the wetsuit goes on, not after you've already started chafing during warm-up. Cover the entire collar contact zone, extending a bit wider than where you think the suit will actually sit.
You won't be able to reapply mid-swim, so front-load the coverage. For a longer swim, that includes the underarms if your suit has short sleeves, and the back of the neck where a ponytail or a wetsuit pull-tab can create a second hot spot.
Skip petroleum-based products. Petroleum jelly and some oil-based balms can break down neoprene bonding and glued seams with repeated use. Silicone-based or purpose-made anti-chafe balms are the safer long-term choice, particularly since chemical damage from improper products isn't something a wetsuit warranty will cover.
Water temperature changes the whole equation, too. Above roughly 70 to 72°F, plenty of swimmers switch to sleeveless suits or swimskins. Less neoprene touching skin means less total chafe risk, on top of staying cooler over a longer swim.
The Sighting Connection Nobody Talks About
Here's the part that gets skipped: chafe tolerance and sighting efficiency train together. Swimmers who drill a low, minimal-lift sighting pattern in open water reduce their time per hundred meters and their collar-cycle count at the same time. Better technique, less chafe. Same drill.
If your sighting work only happens on race week, you're not just undertrained on technique. You're finding out how your collar handles real head movement for the first time under race stress.
Try this in your next open water session: swim 400-meter repeats, alternating normal freestyle with a version where you deliberately minimize head lift on your sighting breaths. Pay attention to where your neck feels the collar drag in each version. That tells you something about your technique and your fit at the same time.
After the Swim
Rinse any chafed skin with fresh water as soon as you're out, especially after saltwater or chlorine exposure, both of which irritate skin that's already compromised. A mild, fragrance-free moisturizer afterward helps recovery between sessions.
Repeated chafing in the same spot without recovery time can toughen the skin over a season. Some longtime open water swimmers treat that as a small, eventual upside. It's not something worth forcing by ignoring irritation early in the year.
Fit, Then Technique, Then Cream
Anti-chafe cream is genuinely useful. It just works best as the last step behind a wetsuit that actually fits and a stroke that doesn't force the collar to do more work than it should. Check the fit. Test swim it. Clean up your sighting. Then let the cream handle whatever friction is left.
That order, not the brand of cream in your swim bag, is what separates managing chafe from just putting up with it every season.
