Most swimmers think about chafing cream only after a long open water session leaves a raw stripe across the back of the neck. The instinct is to buy a balm. The better move is to ask why the suit rubbed in the first place.
Friction injuries are mechanical problems before they are skin problems. When skin, water, and neoprene move under load, the outer layer absorbs repeated shear. Salt, chlorine, and dried sweat make the surface more abrasive. A balm can reduce friction temporarily. It cannot change a collar that sits wrong or a shoulder seam that pulls.
Why Skin Breaks Down After Forty Minutes
Water softens the outer layer of skin. Swimmers see it as pruning, but the process underneath is maceration. Softened skin resists shear poorly, so pressure that felt fine for ten minutes can leave damage after a longer swim.
In a swim wetsuit, most chafing happens where a seam, zipper, or collar edge touches skin. The neck moves with every breath and sighting. Underarm seams follow the entire arm cycle. Cuffs move less but still see repetitive motion on every stroke and kick.
The Four Chafing Zones on a Swim Wetsuit
- Neck and collar: A high collar or one that folds under the chin rubs on every breath. A low collar can gap and let water move through. You want a flat seal against the base of the neck.
- Underarm and shoulder seam: If a seam pulls through the armpit on arm entry, the suit fights the shoulder. If a panel shifts, the torso fit is off.
- Wrist and ankle cuffs: Loose cuffs flush water, dragging salt and sand. Tight cuffs restrict circulation and rub.
- Back of the neck and zipper: A zipper pull, cord, or flap can create a hard point when you sight or rotate to breathe.
Cream Masks Fit Problems When the Same Spot Keeps Failing
Cream reduces surface friction. It does not change where a suit sits, how panels stretch, or whether the neck seal lies flat. If the same red line appears after every swim, the cream is hiding a fit or donning issue.

- Pull the leg and torso panels up before settling the shoulders. Most neck and underarm chafing comes from material sitting too low. Work the suit upward with your finger pads, not your nails.
- Lay the neck seal flat against the skin. No folds, no rolls, no hair trapped underneath. A fold becomes a ridge that rubs for the entire swim.
- Reach through a dry land stroke. The shoulder seams should move with you. A seam digging into the armpit means the shoulder is too small. A shifting panel means the torso is too large.
- Flex your wrists and point your toes to check the cuffs. They should lie flat and stay put. A sliding cuff is a chafing cuff.
If a hot spot remains after these checks, adjust the suit once more before opening the tube. Moving the suit higher can shift a seam off the pressure point.
Reading a Chafing Cream Label
Ingredient families matter more than the brand name.
- Silicone-based formulas: Often listed as dimethicone. They form a water-resistant film with low friction. They hold up in water but need more rinsing from neoprene.
- Petroleum-based products: Block moisture inexpensively, but heavy petrolatum can leave residue on seals and seams.
- Lanolin: A waxy emollient that works for some skin and irritates others.
- Beeswax and plant butter formulas: Thicker and longer lasting in salt water, but they can leave a visible film on dark neoprene.
- Zinc oxide: Works as a barrier. Use it over already irritated skin. It does not stop friction the way a silicone film does.
Apply cream to dry skin before you put on the suit. Rub a small amount into the neck, underarms, and any cuff line that rubs. Wait a minute for it to set. Keep it off the smooth inner surface of the neck seal. You want the seal to sit flat and stay put.
Yesterday's Salt Makes Today's Chafing Worse
Salt crystals, chlorine, dead skin, and old cream collect in the collar and armholes. When the suit dries, that mixture hardens into a mildly abrasive layer exactly where you need smooth contact. This is why a chafing problem can appear even when the suit fit well for weeks.
Rinse the suit in fresh water after every swim. Focus on the neck and underarms. If you use chafing cream, take extra time flushing those areas. Dry the suit inside out first, then turn it right side out and keep it out of direct sun. A clean contact surface protects your skin more than any balm.
When Cream Earns Its Place
Cream still has a job. Long cold water swims, salt water days, and back to back training sessions all create extra skin stress. Sensitive skin, a new wetsuit, and a first high volume training week make a water-resistant friction barrier worthwhile.
The key is using cream as a short term protective layer while you sort out the fit. If the same spot keeps failing after every adjustment, the suit needs attention. If the suit fits and a minor hot spot appears only after a long session, cream is a reasonable tool.
A wetsuit should feel snug on land and more comfortable in the water. If you are applying more cream at every swim just to tolerate the neck, that is a signal to check the collar, the shoulder panels, and how high the torso sits before you ever get in the water.
