Most triathletes learn freestyle in a pool, then pull on a wetsuit a few days before a race and expect the same stroke to transfer. It won't. A swim-specific wetsuit changes your body position before your first arm pulls. The legs ride higher, the hips sit closer to the surface, and the shoulder load shifts. That altered position is the reason triathlon wetsuits exist. You need to train the wetsuit stroke as its own skill.
The wetsuit stroke is a recent invention
In 1993 the company that became blueseventy was founded as Direct Innovations and developed one of the first triathlon wetsuits. It later served as the official wetsuit of Ironman in its early history. Those first suits were heavier and less flexible than today's designs, so the stroke had to work around the suit. The 2005 rename to blueseventy and the 2012 London Olympics mark a different era. At those Games the Helix was first out of the water in both the men's and women's races, and blueseventy athlete Alistair Brownlee won triathlon gold. In 2018, blueseventy added LIFT buoyancy panels to the Helix. Each change reduced how much the suit interfered with the swimmer's natural stroke.
Buoyancy moves your hips and legs first
When you put on a swim-specific wetsuit, the neoprene holds your hips and thighs near the surface. blueseventy builds its suits from Yamamoto neoprene in 38, 39, and 40 cell grades. Higher cell numbers mean more flexibility. When the suit supports your lower body, your kick has less work to do. Your body rotates around a longer axis, and that directs more energy into the catch and pull instead of keeping your legs from sinking.
Beginners gain more from this effect than advanced swimmers. They spend a larger share of their swim fighting hip and leg drag. blueseventy's published guidance puts it simply: buoyancy equals speed in the water.
Shoulder fit decides how long your stroke lasts
A wetsuit that fits correctly should feel snug on dry land and more comfortable once you are in the water. If the shoulders are too tight or the suit isn't pulled up into the armpits, the recovery becomes the first place you feel it. A suit bunched at the shoulder forces you to fight the neoprene on every arm swing, and that creates early fatigue.
Before you blame the suit, check the donning sequence.
- Pull the legs up high.
- Work the torso up so there is no gap at the crotch.
- Settle the shoulders so the neoprene sits deep into the armpits.
- Rotate your arms overhead. If the shoulders still pull down, the size or the model does not match your stroke.
The Helix uses thin, flexible neoprene in the arms and shoulders to reduce that resistance. The Reaction and Fusion use more durable neoprene that survives frequent training better. blueseventy's own guidance notes that thin race neoprene will break down more quickly with frequent use. Reserve the Helix for race day and key sessions. For women, Femme Fit changes the pattern in the bust, torso, wrists, and ankles. A lowered neckline and longer zipper make entry easier and reduce chafing. The same shoulder rule applies.
Catch feel and the early vertical forearm
A wetsuit can soften the feel of the water on your forearms. That makes the catch vague, and a late catch lets the stroke lose its anchor. The Helix includes a permeable catch panel on the forearm, a design blueseventy introduced in 2010. That panel lets water contact the inner forearm and helps preserve the feel for the water that a pool swimmer relies on.
A useful cue in a wetsuit: set the forearm early. As your hand passes the shoulder, your palm and inner forearm should already face back. The suit's buoyancy holds your body position. Your job is to anchor the forearm and keep the elbow high through the pull. Do not overreach at the front. A long glide with no anchor is slower than a shorter, connected pull.
Stroke rate, distance per stroke, and a simple test
Most swimmers settle into a longer stroke in a wetsuit. The added buoyancy allows a slightly lower turnover without the legs dropping. That is useful, but only if the front of the stroke stays connected. Over-gliding creates a dead spot at the front. Spinning the arms wastes the buoyancy.
Run this test.
Swim 4 x 200 in the suit at race effort and count strokes per 50. Compare that with your pool count. A drop of several strokes per 50 can signal over-gliding. If your wetsuit count stays the same as your pool count, you might be leaving the suit's body position unused.
Training sessions that transfer
You do not need to swim every workout in a wetsuit. One weekly open water session or a dedicated wetsuit set in a pool that allows them is enough. Keep technique sets short so fatigue does not corrupt the movement.
- 4 x 200 build with stroke count. Start easy and build to race effort, counting strokes on the last 50 of each 200.
- 8 x 50 early vertical forearm. Focus on setting the forearm before the hand passes the shoulder.
- 6 x 100 sighting. Sight every 8 strokes and hold the body line. Do not press down with the lead hand.
- 200 easy, then 100 smooth. Alternate relaxed swimming with race-pace stroke to feel the change.
After every wetsuit swim, rinse the suit in fresh water and dry it inside out away from direct sun. The warranty does not cover fingernail punctures or heel tears, so handle the suit by the neoprene, not the liner.
Matching the suit to your stroke
The right suit depends on how often you swim and how much shoulder freedom your stroke needs. The Helix suits a racer who wants maximum flexibility and will save it for race day. The Reaction is the workhorse for longer weekly swims. The Fusion suits shorter, frequent swims with a lower neckline and durable feel. A sleeveless suit removes arm restriction entirely and works for swimmers who already hold good body position. Think of them as entry points across the range. If you can, try the suit on the way you will race: snug on land, comfortable in the water, no bunching at the shoulders.
Cold water and race-day rules
If your race water sits below roughly 56 to 58 degrees Fahrenheit, the Thermal Reaction adds a Zirconium jersey lining for extra thermal protection. Cold water changes the stroke. Your shoulders tighten, your face and hands feel the cold, and your stroke may shorten. Acclimate gradually, swim with a buddy, and get out if you feel numbness or strong shivering. A wetsuit adds thermal protection but is not a substitute for safe open water practices.
Before race day, check the current wetsuit rules for your sanctioning body. Different races set different water temperature cutoffs, and those rules change.
Take a test swim
