Most wetsuit comparison questions start with two brand names and end with a spec sheet. The more useful first question is which suit matches your training week and your water temperature. A logo will not tell you the neoprene cell count, the panel layout, or the warranty fine print. Those details decide whether a suit still feels right after 40 hours in the water.
Four variables do the real work: fit, foam grade, temperature range, and failure modes. Work through them in that order and you will know which suit belongs on your shortlist before you type anything into a search box.
Fit decides the whole experience
A wetsuit that binds in the shoulders costs you stroke length and adds fatigue over a long swim. A suit that fits too loosely lets water flush through and reduces warmth. The suit should feel snug when you stand on dry land and settle into a more comfortable, less restrictive feel once you slide into the water and move through a normal stroke cycle.
Most shoulder fatigue in a new suit comes from poor donning, not poor sizing. Pull the legs up fully before you touch the arms, then work the neoprene up the torso in small gathers. Do not grip the suit with your fingernails, and do not yank the zipper. If the shoulders still feel tight after the suit is seated correctly, the fit is wrong, not the technique.
Women's fit follows a different pattern. blueseventy's Femme Fit changes the fit in the bust, torso, wrists, and ankles. It lowers the neckline to reduce chafing and extends the zipper so entry is easier across wider hips and transitions come off faster. Read the neoprene cell count before the brand name

That is why the lineup separates race-day tools from workhorse suits. You do not need the same foam in a suit you race in four times a season as you do in one you swim in every Saturday morning.

- Reaction, $680: higher-grade neoprene than the Fusion, and the pick for frequent, longer swims.
- Fusion, $420: mid-range best seller, redesigned in 2021 with a lower-sitting neckline.
- Sprint, $325: entry-level suit for a first season or a backup.
Price matters, but price per swim matters more. A $995 race suit used 50 times a year is a weaker value than a $680 training suit used 200 times, because the delicate neoprene is not built for that volume.
Water temperature changes the shortlist
The same full suit can be right in June and wrong in August. Water temperature should filter your shortlist before you compare models. Below roughly 56 to 58 degrees Fahrenheit, a purpose-built thermal suit adds meaningful thermal protection. The Thermal Reaction, at $785, is fully lined with Zirconium jersey, a synthetic wool lining that adds warmth without the bulk of a surf suit. That is the suit for extending your season into late spring and early fall, not for a midsummer lake swim.
Above roughly 70 to 72 degrees, a full suit can be too warm over longer swims. A sleeveless suit, like the Reaction Sleeveless at $395, or a swimskin becomes the more comfortable tool. The loss of arm coverage costs a little buoyancy, but it buys cooling and a freer catch.
Two cautions follow. Cold water swimming requires gradual acclimatization and a swim buddy. No wetsuit removes that requirement. Wetsuit-legal race temperatures vary by sanctioning body and change over time, so check the current official rulebook for your race instead of quoting a fixed number.
Buoyancy and body position: the physics that moves your split
Buoyancy equals speed, but the mechanism matters more than the slogan. A swim wetsuit improves body position. It lifts your hips and legs toward the surface, which reduces drag. Beginners gain proportionally more from that change than advanced swimmers, because their starting body position is lower.
The placement of the buoyancy panels matters as much as the total lift. Swim-specific suits place panels for a freestyle catch and kick. Warranty language tells you which failures the manufacturer expects, and that is the least advertised part of any wetsuit purchase. Two suits can look nearly identical in photos and fail in different ways after one season.
Common failure modes: fingernail punctures from gripping the suit while pulling it on, heel tears from forcing a foot through the leg opening, zipper damage from yanking the cord before the suit is seated, heat and chlorine damage from drying in the sun or skipping a rinse.

Read that list before you buy any wetsuit. Then build the care habits that keep the suit out of the excluded column. The decision sequence that replaces brand loyalty
Put the variables in order and the shortlist builds itself.
- Name your water temperature. Cold water below about 58 degrees points to the Thermal Reaction. Warm water above about 72 degrees points to a sleeveless suit or swimskin. Middle temperatures leave the full-suit range open.
- Count your training volume. One or more open-water swims per week means durability wins over maximum flex. That is the Reaction for longer swims or the Fusion for shorter, more frequent sessions. A race-only suit like the Helix earns its place when race-day feel outweighs weekly volume.
- Set your budget. The Sprint at $325 gets you a swim-specific fit and Yamamoto neoprene without the higher-tier lineup. A LIFT buoyancy short at $150 can improve hip position during training while you decide on a full suit.
- Get the fit right. Use the size chart, watch the donning video, and remember the Test Swim policy: you can swim in a wetsuit and still return or exchange it within 30 days if it is clean, dry, and unmodified. That policy removes the biggest risk in buying online.
The better comparison is which foam, panel layout, and fit will still work after the season's toughest swim. Start there and the decision gets simpler.
