A size chart asks two questions: how tall are you, and how much do you weigh. From those two numbers, it hands you a size. For most swimmers, that's enough. For plenty of others, cyclists with built-up quads, powerlifters, or anyone who simply carries more mass below the waist than above it, the chart lands them in a suit that fits everywhere except one place. Torso, fine. Shoulders, fine. Thighs, fighting back the entire swim.
This isn't a fitness issue. It's a proportions issue, and it needs a fit-based answer rather than the standard advice to size up and hope for the best.
Why Height and Weight Don't Tell the Whole Story
Size charts get built from averages. Take a large enough sample of swimmers at a given height and weight, and you get a predicted set of proportions, chest, waist, thigh, calf. That works well near the center of the distribution. It works badly for anyone whose body doesn't sit there.
Two swimmers can share identical height and weight, land on the same recommended size, and still differ by two inches in thigh circumference. The chart has no way to catch that. It only knows what it was told.
Neoprene makes the gap worse. It doesn't stretch the way compression fabric does. Blue70 wetsuits use Yamamoto neoprene in 38, 39, and 40-cell grades, and a higher cell count means more flexibility through the joints, more give when you bend a knee or reach through a stroke. Flexibility isn't the same thing as capacity, though. A 40-cell panel bends more easily than a 38-cell panel. Neither one expands to fit girth it wasn't cut for. Push past what a panel was designed to hold, and the suit stops stretching politely. It restricts.
What a Restricted Thigh Does to Your Stroke
Here's the part most sizing conversations skip entirely, and it matters more than comfort alone.
The kick contributes less to overall freestyle speed than the arms do, but it still governs body position. And body position is where buoyancy turns into speed. Restrict the hip flexors and knees with a too-tight thigh panel, and the kick shortens almost automatically. A shortened kick drops the legs lower in the water. Lower legs create more drag through the hips and torso. The swimmer works harder to hold the same pace, fighting the water instead of moving through it. That fight compounds, stroke after stroke, over the length of an open-water leg.
There's a second cost, and it shows up on land. A suit that restricts the thighs is harder to remove. Fatigue in a poorly fitted wetsuit usually starts at the shoulders during donning, but the same logic applies at the legs during doffing. Neoprene that fights you going on will fight you again coming off. In a transition zone, those extra seconds add up fast.
Testing Fit Before You Ever Get Wet
The general rule holds: a wetsuit should feel snug on dry land and grow more comfortable once you're in the water, since water pressure changes how the material sits against the body. That principle applies at the thigh too, with one important caveat. Snug isn't restrictive. If bending a knee to a normal kick angle feels difficult while standing still and dry, water submersion isn't going to fix that. That's a suit shaped wrong for your legs, not a suit that needs time to break in.
Three checks are worth doing before the first swim in anything new.
- The full squat. Bend both knees to at least ninety degrees. Sharp pulling behind the knee or across the front of the thigh means the leg panel is too short or too narrow, no matter what the chart said.
- The seated kick. Sit on a bench, legs hanging free, and simulate a flutter kick. Watch for restriction at the hip crease. Standing checks miss this one.
- The seam check. Look at where the inner thigh seams actually land once the suit is on. A seam positioned for a slimmer thigh shifts location on a larger one, and that shift often turns into a chafing point nobody designed for.
Three Ways to Actually Solve This
"Large thighs" isn't one body type. It covers cyclists, lifters, and plenty of swimmers whose legs simply carry different proportions than their torso. That means there's no single universal fix. A few approaches are worth trying.
Size up specifically to accommodate the thighs, then treat any looseness elsewhere as a smaller, separate problem. A little extra room at the underarms or lower back is a comfort question. A restricted thigh is a mechanical one, and it changes your stroke.

A suit that felt fine after twenty minutes in a pool can reveal its limits after forty minutes in open water, once fatigue sets in and your kick naturally drops lower.
The goal isn't a suit you forget about entirely. No wetsuit does that. The goal is a suit where your legs are the last thing on your mind at the midpoint of the swim, not the first.
