Every triathlon finish line photo looks the same: arms up, medal incoming, crowd noise in the background. Nobody photographs the ten seconds before it, back in the swim exit chute, when two volunteers grabbed your ankle cuffs and pulled your wetsuit off while you lay flat on the pavement. That job has a name. It's called stripping, and it's one of the most physically demanding, least appreciated roles in the sport.
Understanding how stripping actually works should change how you prep your suit, your legs, and your race morning. It rarely does, because almost nobody thinks about transition as a skill until they're standing in the chute watching an exhausted volunteer power through the athlete ahead of them.
The Mechanics of a Wetsuit Strip
The process itself is simple to describe. You peel your wetsuit down to the waist as you run out of the water. You reach the strip lane, lie flat on your back, and two volunteers each grab an ankle cuff. On a count, they pull the suit inside-out and off in one motion while you lift your hips to clear the fabric.
Simple to describe. Harder to execute well at hour two of a shift. A stripper working a busy swim exit repeats this dozens of times in a row, hands wet the whole time, grip fading, working through suits soaked in lake water, sunscreen, and occasionally worse. None of the friction that follows is the volunteer's fault. Almost all of it is preventable, just not by them.
Why the Strip Line Exists
Pulling a wet, snug wetsuit off your own legs while your heart rate is still climbing from a hard swim is harder than it looks on video. Neoprene grips wet skin. A tired athlete working alone, with reduced grip strength and heavy breathing, can lose the better part of a minute fighting a suit that two fresh volunteers would remove in under ten seconds. Multiply that across a full field and the case for a dedicated strip line becomes obvious.
There's a second function that gets less attention: safety. An athlete lying flat with a volunteer's full focus on them is being watched closely. Race medical staff treat the strip lane as an informal checkpoint. If someone can't follow a simple instruction, or can't lift their hips to help, that gets noticed here, not fifty yards down the chute where nobody's paying close attention.
What Your Suit Contributes to the Pull
Most wetsuit fit advice is written entirely around the swim: snug on dry land, comfortable once wet, free through the shoulders. Strip performance depends on a different set of details worth knowing before race morning.
- Neoprene flexibility at the ankle and calf. Blue70 wetsuits use Yamamoto neoprene in 38, 39, and 40 cell grades. Higher cell counts mean more flexible rubber, which matters for your catch in the water and for how quickly the suit rolls off your leg under pulling force on land.

Rehearse the Removal, Not Just the Swim
Add one habit to your race morning: practice getting the suit off, not just getting through the water.
Work the suit down past your hips and thighs yourself before you reach the volunteers. Every second you spend still fighting the suit off your torso is a second the stripper spends waiting instead of pulling. The fastest transitions belong to athletes who arrive at the strip line with the suit already down at the knees and both arms free.
A thin layer of lubricant at the ankles and calves, applied before the swim, does two jobs. It speeds up your own work getting the suit down your legs, and it cuts the friction the volunteer has to fight through on the final pull. Coaches have taught this for chafe prevention for years. It happens to double as strip-line prep.
Practice the hip lift itself. Lie down at home, suit halfway off, and lift the way you would coming straight out of the water. It feels trivial in your living room. It's not trivial with an elevated heart rate and thirty seconds of adrenaline still moving through your legs. Athletes who've never rehearsed the motion tend to lift late or lift weakly, which forces the volunteer to pull harder and longer than they should have to.
What the Pull Does to Your Wetsuit
The strip line is also the hardest mechanical event your wetsuit experiences all season, harder in most cases than the swim itself. Two adults pulling neoprene inside-out at speed puts real load on the seams, the panel bonds, and the ankle cuff stitching.
Check three spots before you pack the suit away: the ankle cuffs, the inner knee panel, and the base of the zipper, where the pulling motion puts torque on the seal. Rinse the suit in fresh water as soon as you reasonably can. Lake sediment or salt sitting in a stretched seam for the rest of race day speeds up neoprene fatigue that a same-day rinse would have prevented.
This kind of wear sits outside standard wetsuit warranty coverage, alongside fingernail punctures and heel tears, because it counts as use-related wear rather than a manufacturing defect. Catch a small tear early and a neoprene cement repair costs a fraction of a new suit. Leave it, and a small tear at the ankle cuff can turn into a seam separation by your next race.
A Strip Test Worth Adding to Your Fit Checklist
Fit guidance usually stops at the swim: snug on land, comfortable in the water, free shoulders. Add one more check before race day. Put the suit on, zip it, get into a plank position to simulate post-swim fatigue, and have a training partner grab your ankle cuffs and pull the way a volunteer would. A suit built with flexible neoprene through the legs and a clean-sitting neckline should invert in one motion. If it bunches, snags, or takes two or three pulls to clear, you've learned something useful at home instead of in a transition chute.
This isn't an argument for a looser suit. A wetsuit loose enough to strip easily is usually too loose to hold water out at the torso, and that costs more in swim drag than you'll ever recover in transition. The goal is a suit that fits close enough to swim fast and uses flexible enough neoprene through the legs to come off clean.
