Walk through any triathlon transition area forty minutes before a race starts and you'll spot at least one athlete standing beside their bike, foot jammed halfway into a wetsuit leg, a produce bag wrapped around their ankle. It looks like an accident. It isn't. The bag is doing real mechanical work, and understanding that work will change how you think about your own donning routine.
What's Happening at the Ankle
Neoprene doesn't stretch like swimsuit fabric. Yamamoto neoprene, the material Blue70 uses across its wetsuit line in 38, 39, and 40 cell grades, gets its flexibility from a closed-cell structure packed with tiny nitrogen bubbles. Higher cell counts mean more flexibility. That's why the thinnest panels on a race suit move so freely through the shoulders. But flexibility and low friction are two different things.
Skin grips neoprene. Dry skin grips it hardest. Drag a bare foot through a wetsuit ankle opening and you're pulling keratin directly against rubber, with nothing between the two surfaces to let one slide past the other. A plastic bag changes that. It becomes a temporary layer: your foot slides against the plastic, the plastic slides against the neoprene, and neither surface has to fight the other directly. Clear the ankle, pull the bag out through the cuff, and you're done.
The same trick works at the wrist. Most swimmers don't think to try it there until a cold morning at the lake teaches them why they should.
A Donning Problem, Not a Sizing Problem
One assumption trips people up here: if the ankle is hard to get through, the suit must be too small. Sometimes that's true. But a suit that fits correctly, snug on dry land, more comfortable once you're moving in the water, still creates real resistance at the ankle and wrist during donning. That resistance has nothing to do with overall size. The narrowest point of any wetsuit leg has to stretch over the widest point of your foot. Every well-fitted suit runs into that geometry, every time you put it on.
This distinction matters more than it looks. Swimmers who blame the friction on poor fit sometimes size up to solve it, trading a race-ready fit for a suit that's easier to enter but slower once they're swimming. Extra material at the torso or thigh adds drag. It also lets water flush in and out with every stroke, working against the thermal protection and buoyancy the suit was built to provide. The bag solves a donning problem. It should never be the reason you size up.
Why Race Morning Makes It Worse
Two conditions make ankle friction worse, and both show up on every race morning. Cold water pulls blood away from your extremities, and skin that's been in the water even briefly swells slightly and loses some of its give. Add the urgency of a T1 transition, where every second spent fighting a cuff is a second not spent on your bike, and a technique issue that felt minor during a relaxed test swim turns into a real obstacle when the clock is running.

How to Use the Bag Correctly
The trick works, but only if you do it right. A few details separate a clean entry from a frustrating one:
- Start dry. Wetting your skin first seems logical, but it often increases suction against neoprene instead of reducing it. A dry foot inside a dry bag creates the cleanest slide.
- Use a small produce bag, not a full grocery bag. Extra material bunches at the ankle and folds over itself, creating a new friction point instead of removing one.
- Work one leg fully into place before starting the other. Settling one leg completely, bag removed, keeps the whole suit from twisting out of position.
- Repeat at the wrist if your cuffs run snug. Plenty of swimmers only bag their feet and then fight needlessly at the hands.
- Practice this before race day. The motion should be automatic under pressure, not something you're figuring out for the first time with your heart rate already up.
What the Trick Can't Fix
A plastic bag solves entry friction. That's all it solves. It does nothing for shoulder mobility, torso fit, or the overall flexibility of the neoprene itself. If your shoulders fatigue mid-swim, or you feel restricted through the chest on the reach phase of your stroke, that's a fit or model question, not a donning question. It belongs in a conversation about sizing, not a conversation about grocery bags.
It's worth being honest about suit care here too. Yanking hard on a cuff, bag or no bag, especially by the heel, is one of the most common ways swimmers put stress fractures into brand-new neoprene. Fingernails cause the other common damage. Both fall outside what manufacturer warranties typically cover, because they come from handling, not manufacturing defects. Used the right way, the bag trick protects your suit. It removes the friction that tempts you to pull harder than you should.
Fit Still Matters More Than the Bag
None of this is complicated. A wetsuit isn't hard to put on because something's wrong with it. It's hard to put on because neoprene is built dense enough to hold body heat and buoyant enough to improve body position, and those same properties make it grip skin at the ankle and wrist. A twenty-cent plastic bag doesn't change the suit. It changes the interface between suit and skin for the few seconds that matter most.
Once you understand why the trick works, you can tell a real fit problem apart from ordinary friction. If your suit fits snugly on land and swims well once you're moving, a bag at the ankle is a donning aid, nothing more. If you're still fighting the suit past the ankle and knee, that's worth a proper fit check before your next race, not a bigger bag.
