Swimrun Wetsuit Pockets: What They Need to Get Right

Most wetsuit design assumes one transition: swim to bike, once, at the start of a race. Swimrun asks for something different. A competitor might climb out of the water eight or ten times on a single course, running trails, rock scrambles, and stretches of pavement between each swim leg, often carrying paddles, a pull buoy, or a water bottle the entire way. For most of that race, the suit works as running kit that also happens to swim well. Pockets are where that dual job gets tested.

A triathlon cut resists adding a pocket

Triathlon wetsuits are built around one goal: move the torso and shoulders through water with as little resistance as possible. Panels sit where they support the catch phase of the stroke. Neoprene gets thinner at the shoulders for range of motion. The whole garment is cut to be shed in seconds during a swim-to-bike transition. None of that engineering plans for a zippered pouch sitting against the lower back or thigh.

Add a pocket to that cut and a few problems show up fast.

  • A pocket seam creates a stress point exactly where the neoprene is already thin and flexible, so it's usually the first place a suit tears.
  • A loaded pocket shifts how the suit floats, changing body position in ways a swimmer who trained in a pocket-free suit has never had to correct for.
  • A pocket placed without thought for running gait bounces or chafes on a five-kilometer trail leg, in a way that never shows up in a 400-meter pool set.

What a loaded pocket does to your stroke mechanics

Efficient body position depends on a roughly horizontal line from head to hips, with the legs trailing near the surface. Add even a modest, uneven load, a paddle strapped to one thigh, a bottle riding in a single rear pocket, and you introduce a rotational imbalance. The loaded side sits lower in the water. Over a thirty-minute swim leg, most swimmers compensate without noticing, usually with a wider kick or an uneven pull, and that compensation raises the energy cost of holding the same pace.

Keep the load close to your center of mass instead of out at the extremities, and split weight across two pockets where the course allows it rather than stuffing everything into one. Few athletes rehearse this. They test the wetsuit empty in the pool, load it with paddles and a bottle for the first time on race morning, then wonder why the swim legs feel harder than training paces suggested.

Running in a half-zipped suit changes where a pocket needs to sit

Triathlon coaching spends plenty of time on the swim-to-bike transition and almost none on running in a wetsuit, because triathletes almost never do it. Swimrun flips that. Competitors spend most of the race running in a partially unzipped or half-shed suit, and a pocket has to work in that state too, not only when the suit is fully zipped for a swim leg.

A pocket sewn high on the back stays clear of the water and out of the way of your arm's recovery while swimming. Pull the top half of that same suit down and tie it around your waist for a run leg, and that pocket can end up bouncing against your shoulder blades with every stride. A thigh pocket that lies flat in the water can dig straight into the hip flexor on a run. This kind of fit problem only shows up when you test the suit doing exactly what the race demands: swim, run in the half-worn suit, swim again. A pool test swim, useful as it is for stroke feel, won't reveal it.

Questions worth answering before race day, not during it

A short list is worth working through in training rather than discovering mid-race.

  • Does the pocket stay closed under wave action and repeated dolphin dives at water entry? A pocket that stays shut in a calm pool can pop open the moment there's chop.
  • Can you open, load, and reseal the pocket one-handed, mid-swim, without breaking your stroke rhythm? Some formats require grabbing a bottle or gel without stopping.
  • Where does a loaded pocket sit once the suit is half off and you're running? Test this on the actual terrain, not a treadmill.
  • How does the seam hold up after repeated contact with rock and gravel? Wet, water-softened neoprene abrades faster than dry neoprene, so trail contact is harsher on a submerged suit than most swimmers expect.

Answer these during a training session built to mirror the race, not during a single pool swim.

Caring for a pocket-equipped suit

A pocket adds a second interior surface that traps grit, sand, and salt in a way a smooth wetsuit panel never does. After a swimrun session, rinse the pocket inside and out, not just the suit's exterior, and let it dry fully open rather than zipped shut. Grit left inside a closed seam acts as an abrasive every time the suit flexes, wearing down exactly the stress point that's already the most vulnerable part of the garment.

It's a small habit. It's also the difference between a pocket seam that survives a season and one that splits by the third race.

Standard wetsuit warranty terms cover manufacturing and material defects for one year, but they don't extend to wear and tear, heel or fingernail damage, or zipper stress from forced use. A grit-damaged pocket seam falls on the wrong side of that line, so rinsing and air-drying the pocket protects the part of the suit doing the most unusual work.

Matching gear placement to the actual course

Not every swimrun event calls for the same carry setup. A course with short swim legs and long trail sections favors keeping gear minimal and centrally placed, since running comfort matters more over the greater time spent on land. A course with long swim legs and exposed, technical water favors a setup that stays sealed and low-profile, since stroke efficiency matters more across forty minutes of continuous swimming. Study the course profile before deciding what to carry and where, rather than copying a training partner's setup from a different race.

A pocket looks like a minor line on a spec sheet. On a swimrun course it's one of the few parts of the suit doing double duty as both swim gear and running gear, under load, repeatedly, in changing conditions. Testing it the way you'll actually use it, loaded, mid-run, wet, more than once, tells you more in a single session than any product description will.
