Swimming a Half Ironman Without a Wetsuit: How to Retrain Your Body Position for Warm-Water Races

Every summer, athletes who trained all spring in a wetsuit show up on race morning and find the water too warm to wear one. Puerto Rico's 70.3. St. George in July. Several Gulf Coast and Florida races. Plenty of half Ironman swim legs sit above the point where neoprene becomes optional, or gets pulled from the field entirely.

What gets less attention is what happens, physically and mentally, when someone who trained mostly in a wetsuit has to swim 1.2 miles without one. The suit isn't just insulation. What the Wetsuit Was Actually Doing For You

Body position drives swim speed more than raw fitness does for most age-group triathletes. A study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (Chatard et al., 1995) found that wetsuits reduced the physiological cost of swimming largely by improving horizontal body position, not by adding propulsive force. Neoprene lifts the hips and legs toward the surface, cutting frontal drag, and it does this passively. It costs you no energy at all.

Remove that lift, and your hips sink slightly with every stroke cycle unless your kick and core are strong enough to hold them up on their own. Less passive support means more active work just to stay flat in the water.

Where the Time Actually Goes

The time loss on a non-wetsuit swim rarely comes from losing arm strength. It comes from three places, and they stack on top of each other.

  • Kick frequency rises. Your legs have to work harder to compensate for hip drop, which raises heart rate before the bike leg even starts.
  • Stroke rate often climbs too. Swimmers unconsciously try to muscle through the water instead of trusting a longer, more patient stroke.
  • Sighting gets harder. A lower body position puts your eyes closer to the surface on breaths, which can throw off navigation in any chop or glare.

None of this is fixed. It's a training gap that only shows up once the wetsuit stops covering for it.

Training the Position You'll Actually Race In

If your target race has any real chance of going non-wetsuit, part of your open-water and pool training should happen without one. Start 8 to 12 weeks out from race day, not the week before.

Kick work matters more here than it does in wetsuit-only training. A weekly set of 200 to 400 meters of steady flutter kick, done with a board or in streamline, rebuilds the leg engagement your wetsuit had been supplying for free. Core-focused drills also help, especially ones that emphasize a stable trunk through rotation, like single-arm freestyle or fist drill. They teach your body to hold position through the full stroke cycle instead of leaning on buoyant assist.

Training without a wetsuit resets your stroke rate expectations too. Swimmers who train exclusively in neoprene often develop a shorter, quicker stroke that works fine with the suit's lift and falls apart without it. A handful of sessions each month focused on stroke length, counting strokes per length and working to reduce that count while holding pace, retrains the timing before race week arrives.

A Simple Monthly Framework

  1. One open-water or pool session per week without a wetsuit, focused on kick and body position.
  2. One stroke-count session per week, tracking strokes per length as you build toward race pace.
  3. One longer swim per month at race distance, wetsuit-free, to gauge pacing and fatigue.

Choosing the Right Gear When Neoprene Isn't an Option

When a wetsuit isn't allowed, or the water's simply too warm for one, a swim-specific race suit, often called a swimskin, is the right substitute. These suits run on different design logic than a wetsuit. Instead of neoprene buoyancy, they use tightly woven, low-drag fabric built to reduce surface friction and hold its shape against water resistance. They add no lift. None.

Pacing should reflect that reality. Going out at wetsuit-swim effort in a non-wetsuit race often means blowing up on the back half, since your body is working harder to hold position from the very first stroke. Try a slightly more conservative first 400 to 500 meters, then settle into rhythm once the added kick demand feels manageable. It tends to produce a more even split and a stronger transition onto the bike.
