How to Judge Any Triathlon Wetsuit Before You Buy It

Swimmers ask us to name the single best wetsuit on the market more often than any other question. It's the wrong question to ask. A wetsuit isn't good or bad in the abstract. It's matched or mismatched to your body, your training schedule, and whatever is actually slowing you down in the water. So instead of a rankings list, here's the framework Blue70 uses when we design and test suits. Apply it to anything you're considering.

Start With What the Neoprene Is Actually Doing

Every wetsuit claim traces back to one material property: cell structure. Yamamoto neoprene, which Blue70 uses across the line in 38, 39, and 40 cell grades, gets rated by the density and uniformity of the closed-cell bubbles trapped inside the rubber during vulcanization. Higher cell numbers mean smaller, more numerous, more evenly distributed cells. On your body, that shows up as flexibility and consistent buoyancy from panel to panel.

A lot of marketing language about "premium neoprene" tells you nothing you can actually check. Ask a different question instead: what cell grade, and where does it sit on the suit? A suit built from one neoprene grade throughout is a different engineering decision than one that pairs thinner, higher-cell neoprene in the shoulders with thicker material through the hips and legs.

Blue70's Helix works this way on purpose. Very thin, highly flexible neoprene runs through the arms and shoulders, because that's where restriction costs stroke rate. A thicker, more buoyant layer sits through the lower body, because that's where most swimmers need help holding their legs up. Two different jobs. Two different neoprene grades. One suit.

Don't ask whether the neoprene is good. Ask what grade is used where, and whether that placement matches what's actually limiting your stroke.

The Catch Panel Question Nobody Asks Correctly

Since 2010, Blue70's Helix has included a permeable catch panel on the forearm. It's a section of material designed to preserve some direct feel for the water during the pull, rather than swimming inside a fully sealed rubber sleeve. Sounds small. It isn't.

Swim propulsion depends heavily on the sensory feedback a swimmer gets through the hand and forearm, the signal that tells you when you've locked onto the water before you initiate the pull. Full neoprene coverage across the forearm dulls that signal. A permeable panel is a trade-off: you give up a small amount of buoyancy and thermal sealing in that zone in exchange for restoring some of the feel a bare arm would have.

When you're checking out a suit, feel the forearm material specifically. Is it identical to the torso panel, or does it change? A suit that treats the whole arm as one uniform buoyancy zone is optimizing purely for float. One that varies the material at the forearm is optimizing for feel too.

  • A beginner who needs help with body position benefits more from uniform buoyancy through the arm.
  • A swimmer who already has a confident catch benefits more from preserved feel at the forearm.

Know which one you are before you judge a suit's arm construction.

Buoyancy Equals Speed, But Only in the Right Distribution

"Buoyancy equals speed" gets repeated so often it's worth explaining rather than just quoting. A wetsuit doesn't make you faster by floating you higher everywhere. It makes you faster by correcting hip and leg drop, the two things most swimmers can't hold in a horizontal line without serious kick effort when they're not wearing one. Raise the hips and legs into alignment with the shoulders and you cut frontal drag without touching your stroke mechanics at all.

That's why Blue70's LIFT panels, added to the Helix line in 2018 and built into the LIFT buoyancy short since 2020, sit specifically around the hip and thigh rather than spreading evenly across the whole suit. Even buoyancy sounds appealing on paper. Targeted buoyancy is what actually fixes body position.

Check where the thickest panels sit before you buy. A suit that's uniformly thick everywhere is simpler and cheaper to build. A suit with deliberately varied thickness, thin at the shoulders for range of motion, thick at the hips for lift, is the harder design choice. It's also the one that addresses what actually limits most triathletes: legs that sink because they aren't kicking hard enough to hold themselves up unassisted.

Fit Is a Bigger Performance Variable Than Any Panel

Here's a detail that gets underweighted constantly: an improperly donned suit, especially around the shoulders, causes real fatigue over a race-distance swim, regardless of what the suit is made of. A suit that's the right model but pulled on wrong, arms not fully seated, or a size too small that pins the shoulders, will underperform a lesser suit worn correctly.

Blue70's fit doctrine is simple, and it runs against most first-time buyers' instincts. A wetsuit should feel snug, almost uncomfortably so, on dry land, and more comfortable once you're in the water and the neoprene is fully hydrated and moving with your stroke. Swimmers who size up for dry-land comfort end up with a suit that fills with water at the neck and wrists and rides up mid-swim. Both cost more speed than any difference in neoprene grade ever will.

The Durability Trade-Off Worth Talking About Honestly

Here's where most marketing goes quiet, and where Blue70's own lineup doesn't: the thinner and more flexible a neoprene panel is, the faster it breaks down under repeated training use. The Helix's very thin shoulder and arm panels are a real advantage on race day and a real liability if you're swimming in the suit three times a week for months on end.

Ask yourself one question before buying anything: how many times a week will this suit actually get wet, and does the neoprene grade match that frequency? A suit built purely for minimum drag on one race morning is a different product than one built to survive a full training block. No copy on a hangtag changes that trade-off.

A Practical Checklist for Evaluating Any Suit

Run any wetsuit you're considering through these questions before you commit:

  1. What cell grade of neoprene, and does the placement match where you personally lose time? Shoulders for restriction, hips and legs for drag.
  2. Does the forearm panel differ from the torso panel, and does that match whether you need more feel or more float right now?
  3. Is buoyancy distributed evenly, or targeted at the hips and legs where most swimmers actually need it?
  4. Have you tried the suit on and moved through a full stroke cycle before buying? It should feel snug on land, not floppy.
  5. Does the neoprene grade match your training frequency, or are you buying a race suit and planning to train in it three times a week?
  6. Is sizing built around your actual body proportions, not just a generic height and weight chart?
