Age alone doesn't retire a wetsuit. A suit used once a year and stored carefully can outlast a race suit that logs multiple open-water sessions a week. The question is whether the neoprene still does its job: supporting body position, allowing shoulder extension, and limiting water exchange through the neck and seams.
What aging looks like in a swim wetsuit
Neoprene fails in predictable places first. Check these five areas before you trust an older suit on a cold or long swim.
- Creases and flat spots that don't rebound. Neoprene foam compresses under repeated folding, pressure, and poor storage. If a crease stays after the suit has been laid flat for a day, that panel has lost resilience. It won't sit smoothly against the body anymore.
- Cracks, splits, or nail punctures at stress points. Inspect the neck, armpits, shoulders, and ankles. A clean small cut from a fingernail can be repaired with Aquaseal neoprene cement. A web of fine cracks in the outer layer means the rubber is drying out. That suit is done.
- Seam gaps or peeling tape. Run your fingers along the seams inside and out. If the seam tape is lifting or the glue has separated, water moves through the suit with every stroke. Some seam repairs work. Once multiple seams go, the suit won't fit or feel the same.
- Zipper or neck closure damage. A zipper that catches, separates, or pulls away from the neoprene is a functional failure. Forcing it tears the suit further and is not covered under warranty. The neck seal should sit flat without folding or digging.
- Loss of body-position support. This is the one you feel in the water. If your legs sit lower than they used to, or you work harder to keep your hips up, the neoprene may have compressed past its useful life. A suit does not need to be torn to be too old.
Two checks before your next swim
- Shallow-water bubble check. On a calm swim, watch for a steady stream of bubbles along a seam. A few bubbles are normal when you first get in. Persistent bubbling during steady swimming points to a seam leak.
- Land compression check. Pinch a small fold of neoprene in a low-visibility spot such as the lower back panel. It should feel springy and return quickly when released. If it feels flat and stays compressed, the foam has aged out.
Repair or replace
A single fingernail puncture in a suit that still fits well is a repair job. Clean and dry the area, then apply Aquaseal neoprene cement following the product instructions.
A cracked, stiff, or seam-failing suit with several problem areas is a replacement. Repairing widespread breakdown takes more time than it returns in comfort. The one-year warranty covers manufacturing and material defects for the original owner. It does not cover wear and tear, fingernail punctures, heel tears, or zipper damage from force. That is not a manufacturing defect.
How to slow neoprene aging
Most avoidable aging happens in the first ten minutes after a swim and in storage.
- Rinse the suit inside and out with fresh water after every salt or chlorine exposure.
- Dry it away from direct sunlight and heat, inside and out.
- Store it flat or on a wide, rounded hanger. Never hang it by the shoulders from a wire hanger.
- Put it on with your fingertips and palms, not your fingernails.
- Do not leave it wadded in a wet bag or in a hot car.
These habits protect the glue, the lining, and the foam.
Choosing the right replacement
