Ask ten triathletes what makes a wetsuit warm and you'll hear about neoprene thickness, panel placement, maybe the difference between a full suit and a sleeveless one. Almost nobody mentions the head or neck. That's strange, because those two areas lose heat faster than anywhere else on your body, and standard triathlon wetsuits don't cover either one.
The reason comes down to basic anatomy. Your scalp sits close to a dense network of blood vessels with almost no fat layer to insulate them. Your neck carries the carotid arteries just under the skin, with even less padding. When your body senses cold water, it restricts blood flow to your arms and legs to protect your core temperature. Your head and neck don't get that same treatment, because your brain needs a steady blood supply no matter what the water temperature says. Heat keeps escaping through your scalp and neck long after your extremities have gone numb.
That's why a wetsuit that fits you perfectly, snug on land, comfortable once you're swimming, can still leave you shivering twenty minutes into a 58°F session. The suit did its job everywhere it covers. It just never covered the two places losing heat the fastest.
A Hooded Vest Solves a Different Problem Than Your Wetsuit
A hooded vest is a separate neoprene layer, usually a hood attached to a sleeveless vest, worn under a full wetsuit or on its own before and after a swim. It's not a replacement for a thermal wetsuit like the Thermal Reaction. Think of it as a patch for the one area a full suit was never designed to reach.
Most swimmers treat cold-water gear as a single decision: wear a wetsuit or don't, buy the thick one or the thin one. A hooded vest turns that into layering instead of an either-or choice. Worn under a full suit, it adds insulation across your chest and upper back while the hood traps warmed water against your scalp and neck the same way your suit does over your torso. Worn alone, it becomes something you put on standing on the beach before you get in, or the moment you climb out, before the real shivering starts.
That second use matters more than it sounds like it should. Your core temperature often keeps dropping for ten to twenty minutes after you exit cold water. Physiologists call this afterdrop: cooled blood from your arms and legs recirculates back toward your core once you stop swimming and your circulation patterns shift. Standing on a beach in a swim brief with wet skin and wind hitting you does more damage during that window than the swim itself did. A hooded vest at the point of exit is doing real work exactly when you need it most.
Why a Swim Hood Isn't the Same as Any Neoprene Hood
Neoprene hoods show up in surfing and diving too, but a swim-specific hooded vest solves a different problem. A surfer's hood needs to survive being dunked over and over. It doesn't need to move with a rotating stroke. A swimmer's hood does. It has to allow full head rotation for breathing and sighting without the neck seal pulling loose, and the face opening has to sit clear of your goggle straps and peripheral vision when you turn to breathe.
The vest portion usually borrows the same construction logic used in thermal wetsuit linings. A synthetic wool-type jersey lining, the same Zirconium lining used in the Thermal Reaction, traps warmth against your skin far better than bare neoprene does on its own. Panel seams sit away from high-friction zones like your underarms and the base of your neck, because a vest worn under a full suit already has two layers of fabric working against each other with every stroke.
Getting the Fit Right
A hood that's too tight across your jaw restricts how wide you can open your mouth to breathe. That barely registers on dry land. Forty minutes into a cold swim, when every breath already costs more effort than usual, a tight hood makes it worse. A hood that's too loose lets cold water flush in and out with each stroke, which defeats the entire point of wearing one.
Here's the fit check that actually tells you something: put the hood on, then rotate your head fully to one side, the way you would to sight a buoy or take a breath. If the neck seal pulls away from your skin when you do that, the neck opening is too small or the vest's shoulder line is fighting the hood's range of motion. If water floods in around your face the moment you tip your head back, the face seal is too loose. You won't catch either problem standing in front of a mirror. You'll only catch them in the water.
What to Know Before Race Day
Open-water swim hoods show up at races for reasons that have nothing to do with warmth layering: they help officials and safety boats spot swimmers, and they add insulation during a cold start. A hooded vest worn purely as an insulating layer is a different equipment category, and the rules around thermal layers vary by sanctioning body and change from season to season.
If you're considering one for competition rather than just training and warm-up, check your event's current rulebook before you assume last year's rule still applies. That's a five-minute check that saves you a disqualification headache on race morning.
When You Probably Don't Need One
Below roughly 58°F, head and neck heat loss becomes enough of a factor that most swimmers benefit from some kind of coverage there, whether that's a hooded vest, a standalone cap layered under a race cap, or a full thermal suit built with an integrated hood option. Above roughly 70 to 72°F, a hooded vest is usually more than you need. At that point you're far more likely to overheat than to lose meaningful core temperature through your scalp.
The real question lives in the middle, the 58 to 70°F range where most triathletes and open-water swimmers actually train. That decision comes down to your own cold tolerance and how long you're staying in.

Taking Care of a Second Neoprene Layer
A hooded vest needs the same care as any neoprene piece. Rinse it in fresh water after every swim, whether you were in chlorine or salt, and let it dry away from direct sun or heat, both of which break down neoprene faster than normal wear does. Because it's usually worn under a full suit, check the shoulder seams periodically for compression wear. That's a friction point a standalone wetsuit never has to deal with, and it's easy to overlook if you're only inspecting your main suit.
If you're building a cold-water kit for the first time, get your full suit fitting right before you add accessory layers on top of it. A hooded vest only works well over a suit that already fits correctly on its own. And if you're not sure whether your training water calls for a vest, a full thermal suit, or nothing extra at all, work that out before your next cold swim rather than during it.
