Swimmers want to train open-water skills in a lap pool without wrecking a race suit, but they phrase it as a request for chlorine resistance. A wetsuit isn't chlorine-proof. The suit body is made from organic polymer materials: chloroprene rubber foam, nylon or polyester linings, seam tapes and adhesives. Pool chlorine is added to oxidize organic material. That puts the sanitizer and the suit on opposite sides of the same chemistry. A swim-specific wetsuit is designed for open water. It gives you buoyancy and thermal protection in lakes, rivers and oceans. It wasn't built to sit in sanitizer for an hour at a time.
What Chlorine Does to Neoprene

If Your Suit Has Already Taken a Pool Swim

- Rinse the suit in cool fresh water as soon as you leave the pool.
- Use a wetsuit cleaner, not household detergent.
- Dry the suit flat or draped over a wide rail, out of direct sun.
- While it is still damp, check the seams for small nicks or loose threads.
- Seal small tears with Aquaseal neoprene cement before they spread.
Heat makes chlorine damage worse. Skip hot water and don't leave the suit in a hot car.
Pool Workouts Need a Different Layer
For daily lap swimming and interval work in a chlorinated pool, use practice swimwear. That category exists for repeated exposure to pool sanitizer. A neoprene wetsuit adds buoyancy and thermal protection, and in a heated indoor pool a full suit becomes too warm over longer swims. Above roughly 70 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit, a full suit can get hot on longer swims. Many indoor pools sit in that range or warmer.

Open-Water Care and the Right Layer
