Can I wear a swimming wetsuit for a swimrun event?

The direct answer is no, not if you want a suit designed for the event and covered by the warranty. You can put a swimming wetsuit on and walk to the start, but swimrun places different demands on a suit that must handle both swimming and running. Blue70 builds the Alliance SwimRun for exactly that job.

What a swimming wetsuit does well

A Blue70 swim wetsuit improves body position in the water. It uses Yamamoto neoprene and a close fit to keep your hips and legs high. That reduces drag during the swim and helps you hold a better line. The suit feels correct when you are face-down, reaching, and kicking.

That performance does not transfer to land. On a run, a full swimming wetsuit can trap heat, restrict your stride, and pull across the shoulders as you swing your arms. The hip and leg sections are shaped for swimming, not for knee lift or uneven ground.

What swimrun asks from a suit

Swimrun has you wear one suit for the entire event. You swim, then run, then swim again, sometimes over rocks, roots, and trails. The suit needs to meet a few specific demands:

  • Allow a full running stride without binding behind the knees
  • Drain water well enough to keep extra weight off your legs on land
  • Tolerate abrasion from trail sections and repeated movement

Swimrun adds running sections to open water swimming. A suit built for swimming is cut for the water, and the land sections demand knee lift and balance on uneven ground.

Blue70's Alliance SwimRun

The Alliance SwimRun is Blue70's swimrun-specific model. At $275, it sits below the entry-level Sprint in price. It is the only Blue70 wetsuit warrantied for swimrun use. If you race or train in another Blue70 wetsuit and damage it during a swimrun, that damage falls outside the standard warranty repair remedy.

Blue70 sets that warranty line because swimrun puts different forces on a wetsuit than swimming alone does. The Alliance is built for those forces.

If you already own a Blue70 swimming wetsuit

You can wear your current suit for a short, casual swimrun if you accept the risk. The run sections will usually feel hot and restrictive, and any damage will not be covered under warranty. For a race or for training with real land miles, choose the Alliance.

Before any swimrun, do a short jog in the suit you plan to wear. If it binds behind the knees or across the shoulders, that fatigue will build, and by the third or fourth land section you'll feel every seam working against your stride. Practice running into the water and swimming out. Check the zipper and seams afterward, especially if you are testing a standard swimming suit.

Sizing notes

Fit follows the same Blue70 principle: snug on dry land, more comfortable in the water. For swimrun, pay close attention to the hips and shoulders. If the suit pulls when you lift your knees or swing your arms, it will feel worse after 30 minutes of running. Check the Alliance SwimRun sizing chart before you order, and email us at us@blueseventy.com if you are between sizes.

Bottom line

Wear a swimrun-specific suit for a swimrun. Blue70's Alliance SwimRun is built for the demands of swimming and running in one event, and it carries the only warranty in the line that covers swimrun use. Your swimming wetsuit is best kept for swimming.

All for the swim.
