A Dry Suit Is a Dying Suit: Why Rinsing Alone Won’t Save Your Wetsuit—and What Will

You rinse your wetsuit after every swim. You hang it inside-out in the shower, let it drip-dry in the shade, maybe even flip it right-side-out once the inside is dry. That’s good. That’s conscientious. But here’s the thing-if that’s all you’re doing, your wetsuit is still slowly dying.

It’s not dramatic. It’s chemistry.

Neoprene-the closed-cell foam that makes your blueseventy suit buoyant, flexible, and fast-is full of plasticizers. Those are the oily compounds that give rubber its stretch and snap. Every time your suit soaks in chlorine, salt, or sunshine, those plasticizers take a hit. A freshwater rinse washes off the surface gunk, but it does absolutely nothing to replace what the neoprene has already lost.

So over time, the suit stiffens. The shoulders stop moving with you. The catch panels lose their subtle give. You might not notice it week to week, but the suit that once felt like a second skin now feels… a little wooden. A little resistant. A little dead.

The fix isn’t complicated, expensive, or time-consuming. It’s wetsuit conditioner spray. And if you’re not using it, you’re leaving years of life on the table.

The Quiet Unraveling of Your Neoprene

Let’s get microscopic for a minute-not because it’s fun, but because it explains why a $30 bottle of conditioner saves you a $700 suit.

The neoprene in a blueseventy wetsuit is Yamamoto rubber, in 38-, 39-, or 40-cell grades. Higher cell count means more trapped nitrogen bubbles, which means more flexibility and more buoyancy per millimeter of thickness. That beautiful material stays pliable because of plasticizers embedded in the polymer matrix. Three things yank those plasticizers out:

  • Chlorine and chloramines. Even a well-maintained pool carries enough chlorine to break polymer bonds over time. It doesn’t happen in one swim, but it’s relentless.
  • Salt and UV. Salt crystals act like microscopic sandpaper on the nylon jersey. UV radiation oxidizes the outer layer, making it brittle. You won’t see the damage after a weekend at the lake, but it’s accumulating.
  • Heat and ozone. The trunk of your car, the deck of a boat, even a sunny windowsill-heat accelerates every chemical reaction that degrades neoprene. Ozone in the air also attacks rubber, which is why old wetsuits sometimes feel gummy or cracked.

Rinsing with fresh water helps with salt and loose chlorine. What it doesn’t do is put back the plasticizers that have already migrated out, or create a barrier against the next round of abuse. That’s the job of conditioner.

What Conditioner Actually Does

Wetsuit conditioner isn’t scented soap. A well-designed formula does three things at once, and each one matters:

1. pH-Neutral Cleaning

Household soaps-dish detergent, laundry soap, hand soap-are almost always alkaline. That means pH levels up around 9 or 10 or even 11. Repeated exposure to alkaline solutions slowly breaks down the rubber. Conditioner is pH-neutral (right around 6-7), so it cleans off sunscreen, body oils, and chemical residues without stripping the material. It’s the difference between washing your face with a gentle cleanser and scrubbing it with degreaser.

2. Plasticizer Replenishment

This is the big one. A good conditioner contains an emulsion-often a water-based silicone or a fatty-acid ester-that soaks into the surface of the neoprene. It replaces some of what chlorine and UV have stolen, restoring pliability and preventing that dry, crinkly feel that’s the first sign of a dying suit. Think of it like conditioning leather boots. Skip it, and the leather cracks. Same idea.

3. UV and Ozone Protection

Some conditioners include UV absorbers or antioxidants that hang around on the suit’s surface, slowing down future damage. It’s not a force field-you still shouldn’t dry your suit in direct sun-but it measurably extends the life of the neoprene, especially if you train outdoors a lot.

The net effect? Your suit stays flexible where it needs to be. Especially in the shoulders. A stiff shoulder panel fights your catch on every stroke. It fatigues you faster, and it subtly alters your body position because you’re working harder just to move through the water. Buoyancy equals speed, and buoyancy works only when the neoprene behaves the way it was engineered to.

The Baby Shampoo Problem

We’ve all heard it from a training buddy or a forum post: “I just use baby shampoo. It’s cheap and gentle, and I’ve done it for years.”

Look, we get it. There’s a whole generation of triathletes who grew up with baby shampoo as the default wetsuit wash. But gentle on skin doesn’t mean compatible with chloroprene rubber. Baby shampoo leaves a surfactant film that can actually trap chlorine against the neoprene. It cleans a little, but it doesn’t condition. It doesn’t replace plasticizers. And over time, the suit still stiffens-just more slowly, maybe, than if you’d used dish soap.

A dedicated conditioner does the whole job. For the cost of a couple of race entries, you can keep a $995 Helix supple and responsive for several extra seasons. That’s not an expense. That’s the cheapest insurance policy in triathlon.

How to Condition Without Overthinking It

There’s no complicated ritual here. The rhythm is simple:

  1. Rinse first. After every swim-pool or open water-rinse the suit inside and out with cool fresh water. Not hot. Hot water is neoprene’s enemy.
  2. Spray inside and out. Turn the suit inside out. Spray conditioner liberally onto the nylon jersey lining and the smooth outer skin. Don’t be stingy; the suit needs it.
  3. Work it in. Gently rub the surfaces together for 15-20 seconds. This helps the conditioner penetrate the neoprene surface and the jersey weave.
  4. Rinse or don’t. Some conditioners are rinse-off, some are leave-on. Read the bottle. Either way, let it sit for a minute or two before you rinse or hang.
  5. Hang to dry in the shade. Never wring, never tumble dry, never drape over a hot radiator or leave in a car. Cool, shaded, and well-ventilated. If you’re drying it outside, flip it inside-out first so the inner jersey dries completely.

For heavy training tools like the Reaction or Fusion-suits that see the pool more than the buoy line-condition after every few swims, at minimum. For the Helix, whose gossamer-thin arm neoprene has less plasticizer to lose in the first place, be religious about it. Condition after every race weekend and every other training swim. That race-day responsiveness depends on it.

Going into off-season storage? Give the suit a final deep condition before it goes into the closet. When you pull it out next spring, it’ll still feel alive-not like you’re wrestling a piece of cardboard over your hips.

The Feel That Fades Without It

There’s a moment every swimmer knows: the first 200 meters of a race or a hard set, when the suit disappears and you just swim. That’s the magic of a suit that fits well and flexes with your body. When the neoprene stiffens, that feeling dulls. You’re still swimming, but you’re fighting the suit just a little. You’re a fraction less smooth in the catch, a tiny bit less buoyant in the hips.

None of this shows up on a spec sheet, but you feel it. Conditioner spray doesn’t make you faster in a vacuum. What it does is preserve the suit’s original character, so you keep getting that smooth, unbroken connection to the water, season after season.
