St Anthony’s Triathlon brings out Potts magic

28 Apr 2009

In the men’s professional race, blueseventy’s Andy Potts, former U.S. Olympian and 2007 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, captured his first victory at St. Anthony’s Triathlon with a time of 1 hour, 46 minutes, and 33 seconds. “On the swim, I swallowed half the bay and coughed it back up on the bike,” said Potts, 33. “I placed second last year, and the goal is to always beat your race number.” Running with the number “2” on his racing bib, the Colorado Springs resident secured his lead in the Olympic-distance race with the fastest run of the day (31 minutes and 38 seconds). Potts beat out 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Terenzo Bozzone, 24, who finished second, completing the race in 1 hour, 48 minutes, and 2 seconds.

With a time of 2 hours and 4 seconds, Rebeccah Wassner, the two-time defending champion at the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon, had her first win at St. Anthony’s Triathlon. Wassner, 34, passed Sara McClarty with only a half mile to go on the run in the women’s professional field. Wassner crossed the finish line holding up 10 fingers to honor the 10th anniversary of her twin sister’s last chemo treatment. “It doesn’t surprise me that she won,” said Laurel Wassner, who also competed in today’s St. Anthony’s Triathlon. “She deserves it.”
