blueseventy’s brilliance at Eagleman 70.3
10 Jun 2008
Despite Kona-like 90 degree temps and stifling humidity, Zeiger led the women’s race from start to finish, kicking off her day in the sun with a race-best 25:37 swim. Although Dede Griesbauer exited the water 35 seconds back of the Tuscaloosa Olympic Trials fourth-place finisher (wearing a fast pointzero3), the Bostonite couldn’t contend with Zeiger’s 2:22:39 bike and found herself several minutes behind the eventual champ at T2. Zeiger’s 1:30:34 run was enough to seal the deal, putting her at the line in 4:22:31, while Griesbauer staved off a surge by a fleet-footed Kelly Handel of Texas to finish second in 4:30:23.
In the men’s race, Amey continued the win streak he started May 18 at Ironman 70.3 Florida to take the Eagleman title in 3:53:32. After finishing the swim just one second back of last week’s Ironman 70.3 Boise winner, Terenzo Bozzone of New Zealand, Amey had put almost four minutes on the Kiwi by T2. Although Bozzone recovered with a day’s-fastest 1:41:21 run, Amey had amassed enough of a lead on the bike to secure the win and leave Bozzone to settle for second in 3:56:24. The 2006 Eagleman champ, Chris Legh, threatened the frontrunners with a smoking 2:06:54 bike split but it was only good enough to net him the bronze in 3:57:23.
